"Swede"
October 6, 1923 - April 14, 2014
Carl Olof Carlson of Indianapolis, Indiana went home to be with his LORD, 11:35 PM Monday night, April 14, 2014, at the age of 90 years 6 months after a short illness.
Carl was born October 6, 1923, a U.S. Citizen, in Tjarna, Bohuslan, Gothenburg, Sweden the second child of Olof B. and Anna L. Carlson. Carl immigrated to the United States at ten months of age August 14, 1924 on the SS Kungsholm with his mother and sister, Lilly. Carl grew up in Springfield Gardens, Jamaica, Queens, Long Island, New York and graduated from Andrew Jackson High School, St. Albans, NY. During his youth, Carl faithfully attended the Swedish Evangelical Pilgrim Church (Congregational) in Brooklyn, NY.
After High School, Carl joined the United States Coast Guard and served on LST 794 (Landing Ship Tank) delivering troops, ammunition, and supplies all over the Pacific. Carl's "Homeward Bound Letter" after the war, to his mother, he would write, " The Lord has been with me all the way."
After WWII, Carl worked as a carpenter for McGraw Hill, NYC. He then joined the Miehle, Goss Dexter Co., NYC erecting and repairing printing presses. He would eventually work in the NYC Office and was in charge of supplying the Northeast (U.S.) with Erectors and Repairmen until his retirement October 1, 1988.
In 1947 Carl's church's newsletter it was written that Carl "was a genuine Christian and ardent worker in the Chapel of Jamaica, is well known in our circles, and is loved and held in high esteem by many."
May 3, 1947 Carl married Esther Alice Nelson of Roslindale, Massachusetts. The young couple made their home on Long Island (mostly on Caryl Street, Franklin Square) for the first 55 years, of their married Life and raised their four children there. In 2002 they moved to Schroon Lake, NY and in 2006 to Indianapolis, Indiana where they lived until their deaths. They were married for 64 years 10 months when Esther died on March 3, 2012.
Carl loved the Lord Jesus and always wanted to serve his Lord. His prayer to his death was "to be in God's will". In the 1950's Carl served Children's Bible Fellowship transporting disabled children to meetings. Along with his family, Carl faithfully attended the Franklin Avenue Baptist Church, Malverne, NY where he served as Deacon, Elder, Youth Group leader, Chief Ranger of Christian Service Brigade (into his 70's in Merrick).
Carl was a devoted husband to his beloved wife, Esther, and they were both devoted to their four children, he was truly a "family man". With his family he loved to camp, fish, boating, cook, travel (Sweden, New England, Alaska, etc. wherever friends and family were located). He loved to work with his hands whether repairing or building. Whatever he designed (houses, toys, etc.) he could build, to the delight of those he helped. It sometimes seemed he could make things out of nothing, to the delight of those he gifted.
Carl also enjoyed "logging" his experiences and documents through words and photos to be enjoyed later, "WWII Experiences and Happenings" and "Family Heritage" are two such works enjoyed by family members. Carl loved to sing, his first solo was at his Confirmation, the third verse of the hymn "My Jesus I love Thee". As a young sailor (WWII) he would sing hymns on "Bow Look-out" and be encouraged to continue as another sailor heard him. Traveling in the car, in the house, or wherever, there always seemed to be a song in his heart. In the introduction to "Family Heritage" Carl shares with his four children: Colossians 1:18c, 3:23 & 24, (known to them as Carl's "work verses") and Ephesians 5: 1 & 2: Therefore, be imitators of God as dear children. And walk in love, as Christ also has loved us and given Himself for us, an offering and a sacrifice to God for a sweet-smelling aroma.
