Esther Alice Carlson
January 10, 1925 - March 3, 2012
Esther Alice (Nelson) Carlson of Indianapolis, Indiana went home to be with her LORD Saturday, March 3, 2012 at the age of 87 after a long illness.
Esther was born January 10, 1925 in Boston, Massachusetts, the fifth of six children of Swedish Immigrants Albert and Agnes (Bjurstrom) Nelson. Esther grew up in Roslindale, MA and graduated from Roslindale High School. During her youth she enjoyed being a Girl Scout and the many church activities of the Swedish Covenant Church in Boston, which she faithfully attended. Esther loved the LORD, people, family gatherings, picnics in the countryside, and traveling throughout her life. With her husband she would enjoy traveling throughout New England, Alaska, California, Sweden, Germany, wherever family and friends lived.
May 3, 1947 Esther married Carl Olof Carlson of Long Island, New York, who she met through a mutual friend from her church. The young couple moved to LI where they lived for 55 years, mostly on Caryl Street in Franklin Square. They attended Franklin Avenue Baptist Church in Malverne. Esther was active in many church ministries: Women's Missionary Fellowship, Pioneer Girl Pal, Vacation Bible School, Sunday School Teacher and along with her husband Youth Group Leader. Esther always had a heart for missions.
Esther had a compassionate, sensitive, servant's heart for others her entire life. She was a mother and grandmother to many besides her own 4 children, 9 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren. If someone had a need, Esther did her best to meet it through babysitting, providing clothing, meals or shelter. Her home on Caryl Street was open to all and an extra place was always available at the dinner table. She enjoyed being a gracious hostess to family, friends, visiting ministers, and missionaries, always making sure everyone had a place to go for the holidays. It was said by others," Esther taught me hospitality".
In 2002 Carl & Esther moved to Schroon Lake, NY where they enjoyed life in the Adirondacks. In 2006 they relocated to Indianapolis, IN where she lived until her death.
Esther is loved and missed by all who knew her. She is predeceased by her four brothers and their wives and sister: Howard (Olga), Robert (Dorothy), L. Walter (Alpha), Ralph (Janet), and Dorothy A. E. Nelson of MA.
Esther is survived by her beloved husband of 64 years & 10 months, Carl O. Carlson of Indianapolis, IN.
