Herman and I worked together at Grove Press, and again at Carroll & Graf, and he was a vigorous man whose profession and passion were the same: books. But no part of life passed him by. He once used a Joseph Conrad quote to describe a string of Yankee losses.  He will be missed.

Great Uncle Herman was a wonderful and inspiring man. He taught me and my sister the love of books. He was a risk taker and someone who believed in uncovering truth. He was a very compassionate man and a great listener...and even better talker. He is beloved and he is missed very much. May his memory be a blessing.

With Kent Carroll, their publishing company Carroll & Graf were major players in the science fiction and fantasy genres. I am sorry to read about Herman's passing. Met him many times at the annual American Booksellers Association conventions, and in their offices in Manhattan.
