Jesse arranged for Michael Bliss, author of "The Discovery of Insulin"  and Teddy Rider, one of the first patients to receive insulin after it was discovered in 1922, to visit the Diabetes Branch at NIDDK in 1985.  It was one of so many memorable occasions that Jesse made available to colleagues and trainees at NIDDK.

To Susan Roth and the kids. Carmen Giuseppe and myself are deeply saddened by the new of your loss. Jesse has been for me an exceptional mentor. I am indebted to him for all my achievements in science and life. I will rember  forever his guidance and will keep memories of the good time we had together in Bethesda, in Baltimore, in New York with my parents and in Napoli and Catanzaro when you came to visit.
May you find comfort in the memory of his always original and innovative thoughts.

Jesse was an exceptional individual in countless ways.  As a scientific leader and mentor to so many of us in diabetes research, he was truly larger than life. His vision as a scientist, his guidance as a mentor, and his joie de vivre are the subject of so many stories, they are impossible to recount. And all of these traits enhanced our lives in ways even our spouses and children felt his presence.  
We will miss him. The field will miss him.

Dear Susan,
I can still see and hear Jesse sitting at the dining room table in Bethesda,, for one of your last minute fabulous Soirées,  discussing  the differences between drip and expressed espresso coffee.      Just memorable. My thoughts are with you and your children. Many more Jesse stories remain with me.
