Johanna Barbara Glass passed away on Thursday, September 25 at the age of 87. Johanna was born in 1938 in Queens, and grew up in Forest Hills and Bayside with her parents, Nat and Toddy Blidner, and her brother Steven. Her beloved husband Martin preceded her in death. Johanna is survived by her 3 daughters Julie Glass, Susan Glass (Aaron Fuegi) and Bonnie Glass (Adam Dorfman); brother Steven Blidner (wife Wendy, nephew Neil and wife Rachel, great-niece Kaylee and great-nephew Max, nephew Evan, niece Rachelle and husband Sam Lundquist); and a large extended family she loved in New York and Toronto.
Johanna was a high school speech teacher who educated students in the art of public speaking. She was endlessly patient and loving, always seeing the progress and overlooking the stumbles. She loved her students and was well-loved in return. Johanna also directed many school plays, and, along with her husband Marty, was very involved in her temple, Temple Emanu-El of Queens (later the Reform Temple of Forest Hills). She especially loved Sisterhood and the Choir.
Johanna treasured her friendships, some of which were nurtured over 30, 40, 50 60, or even 70 years. She loved nothing better than to talk on the phone with her many friends and family, which she continued to do until her last days. She also loved getting together in person, whether it be for informal visits, family celebrations, or special events. She took family members out to dinners or Broadway plays, so she could share the things she loved with those she loved.
Johanna will always be remembered for her joy for life, positive attitude and determination. She leaves a bit of that behind in everyone that knew her.
Contributions in Johanna’s memory can be made to the Reform Temple of Forest Hills, 71-11 112 Street, Forest Hills, NY 11375 or to Susan G. Komen, or to any charity that has meaning to you. Some of her other favorite charities include ASPCA and Feed America.
