Lawrence Shoenthal

Lawrence Shoenthal was a devoted and loving husband, father, grandfather, pet lover, and distinguished attorney whose intelligence and integrity touched every part of his life. He was a consummate professional who took great pride in his work and in doing things carefully and correctly.

Lawrence grew up in the Bronx on Sheridan Avenue, an experience that shaped much of how he saw the world and the people around him. He loved reminiscing about the street games he played—Slug, Box Ball, Stoopball, and the more daring Johnny on the Pony—and about the people he met throughout his neighborhood. From there, he went all the way downtown to NYU, where he earned a degree in accounting with a minor in finance and was part of the inaugural class of the first non-segregated fraternity at NYU. After college, he served in the U.S. Army as an auditor, which brought him to Governor’s Island, where he was stationed for a time. He later ventured even further downtown to Brooklyn Law School, putting himself through school by working as a CPA and playing piano as an accompanist in clubs in the Village. He went on to build a distinguished career in international tax law. He wrote numerous professional articles and took particular pride in being the longest-serving treasurer of the New York State Bar Association’s International Section. Deeply knowledgeable and ethical, he believed in doing things carefully and doing them right.

Though content in his own company, Lawrence enjoyed public speaking and connecting with people. And while New York was always home, he never stayed landlocked there. He earned his pilot’s license. He traveled to more than 30 countries and 48 states, immersing himself in the history and languages of the places he visited. He loved learning about his family history and was a collector of many things, including coins and stamps. Lawrence should be remembered for his deep knowledge of many subjects and his excitement to share it. Throughout his fight with colon cancer, he fought very hard to keep experiencing every day and all that came with it. He will be deeply missed.

Lawrence was preceded in death by his parents: Lester and Julia Shoenthal and his wife Barbara Shoenthal. He is survived by his children Michelle and [Brian Pargman] and Jennifer Shoenthal [and Ahmed Tigani] and grandchildren Macy, Brady, and Jonah along with his beloved cats Ginger and Dutchess.
