Leah K. Indelman, of Rego Park and Cutchogue, NY, passed away peacefully at home on August 12, 2021. Born Leah Krechevsky, on February 18, 1930, in the Bronx, Leah grew up in Yonkers where the neighborhood was her stage and her friends, its players. The theater metaphor was a recurring theme for Leah, with performances of her original scripts at the NYC Parks Department and the Cutchogue Free Library, among other venues, punctuating her long life. An alumna of Barnard College and Bank Street College of Education, Leah was a talented writer, dramatist, Yiddish language enthusiast, and devoted teacher who taught generations of students to read at PS14Q in Corona, Queens. Affectionately known as Mama Leah to family and friends, she cherished her roles as mother, grandmother, (Baba) and great grandmother, and charmed those around her with her bouncy personality and big heart. Predeceased by her husband, the poet and Hebrew scholar Elchanan Indelman, and later by companion Menachem Stern, Leah is survived by her daughters Alta Indelman (Tony Louvis) and Esther Muehlbauer, her grandchildren Stefan (Amy), Evan, Sarah, and Mikael (Binxin) Muehlbauer, and Ezra Louvis, and her great grandchildren, Henry and Eli Muehlbauer.
Graveside services and shiva are private. A memorial event will be announced at a later date.
Contributions in Leah’s memory may be made to Turtle Rescue of the Hamptons, P.O. Box 5, Jamesport, NY 11947.
