Lucy Garcia, 85 years young, passed away on Monday, November 17, 2025. She passed quietly while resting at NYU Langone Hospital in New York City. Her final days were very peaceful. She was happy with her loving family by her side with the calming vista of the Eastside River and bridges looking in on her.
Known for her strong-will and determination to get things done, we called her feisty, but zest for life would be a more accurate description. She will be dearly missed by her children and family who loved her to no end and all of us who were in support of her great bravery and non-ending positive outlook.
Born and raised in the heart of Brooklyn, New York City, Lucy was the beloved daughter of Luz Maria Chavarria Ramos and Gerardo Morales. She was the cherished mother of Albert and Deidre Collins and beloved sister of Mary Cartagena and Santiago Morales.
Lucy graduated from Sarah J. Hale Vocational High School in Brooklyn, New York and went on to receive a license in Cosmetology as she had a knack for making women look their best. After getting married to Albert Collins, who was a chef, she had two children. She later worked at the Department of Veteran’s Affairs in administration, and at various children’s schools also in administration, then went on to work at the U.S. Post Office for 17 years. After retirement, Lucy’s #1 job was being a companion and caregiver and to her mom.
Lucy was an amazing mother who was always there for her children and provided whatever they needed as well as being a high achiever in anything she set her mind to. No matter what challenges she was facing, she always found time to help others. One of the niceties of our great mom is when she dined out, she would often order an extra meal for the homeless. As a foodie, Lucy enjoyed a variety of restaurants – Wolfgang Puck’s was her favorite which served up a spectacular steak.
(And, if you think you could put away a 6 oz. filet mignon quicker than Lucy, you would be sadly mistaken.)
In addition to being a wonderful mother, she had a real passion for New York City. She loved Central Park, the fine arts and was a regular patron of the Metropolitan Museum of Art. On her walks around the city, she would see beyond the beauty of the architecture to the heart and soul of the city itself.
What will be most remembered about our beloved Lucy, mother, sister? Great Strength of Character. Kindness. Motherly Devotion. Appreciation for Life. The Lengths Lucy/Mom would go to for the well-being of her Family!
