OBITUARY

Maritza "Marcy" Castro

February 19, 1957July 26, 2020

Maritza Vega Castro passed away in the embrace of her family on July 2020 in Queens. Better known as Marcy, she was born on February 1957 in NYC to Frank and Carmen Vega. She was the younger sister of Diana Vega. She lost her mother at the age of 5 and was raised by her incredible father, sister and many aunts. They were all a huge influence on the woman she would become. Their love and faith in God was demonstrated to her throughout her childhood. Her sister Diana was her best friend and she adored her father Frank. Marcy was feisty, daring and very strong. These attributes are what led her to become an auxiliary police officer at the 109 precinct in Queens. Here she met her husband John, but wasn’t initially fond of his “loud mouth”. They eventually patrolled together and shortly after began dating. He fell in love with Marcy and her three daughters Nancy, Marlo, and Rachel. They would eventually have their princess, Maritza. John’s parents, Rodrigo and Mayra welcomed Marcy and her girls with open arms. Her sister in law Patricia and brother in law Steven also loved Marcy and her infectious kindness. Through the years she was an energetic and dedicated employee at various jobs, her last was a manager at Loews AMC theater in Bay Terrace. After her employment came to an end, she decided to dedicate all of her free time to her grandchildren. Marcy was a wonderful mother and an extraordinary grandmother to her 14 grandchildren. “Stay happy” was a phrase she used frequently and would often make jokes to assure everyone around her had a smile. Her biggest smile was usually on the car ride to the casino, bingo or watching the METS play. When hanging up the phone, she would inevitably end it with “Dios de acompana” which translates to God accompanies you. Marcy was a selfless woman that always sacrificed her needs for the good of her family. She will be sorely missed and survived by her loving father Frank, adored sister Diana, her beloved husband John, her children Nancy and Alfonso Rojas, Marlo Molano, Rachel Romero, Maritza Castro (Mari), stepson John Jr & Candice Castro and her 14 grandchildren. We dedicate Proverbs 31 vs. 28-29 to her: “Her children arise and call her blessed; her husband also praises her: Many women do noble things, but you surpass them all.
