Skilled with his hands, he won a citywide model airplane contest in NY at the age of 11 – during WWII. As an adult, he put his woodworking and engineering skills to use in a variety of projects – including an alarm system he designed and built after a Christmas Eve break-in at his home. He became a skilled mason, carpenter, electrician & plumber.
He suspended his college studies at CCNY when his stepfather, Henry Norworth, had a serious heart attack. Expecting to be drafted, he soon graduated from the Pierce School of Radio and Television and passed federal exams to earn a 1st Class FCC radio telephone license. This qualified him to operate a commercial radio and/or television station, as well as to maintain and repair its equipment. He was subsequently drafted into the US Army and served in Korea as a radar specialist. When sharing stories about Korea he often spoke about his unit’s unofficial dog, Beverly, and her puppy, Radar. Following his Army service, his engineering and writing skills led to a career that included technical writing (mostly in aerospace topics). He was especially proud of his work with a major rocket guidance system. He eventually completed his degree at CCNY & earned an MBA in Finance from Pace University. After a long career on the technical side for various aerospace contractors, he retired as a Director of Contracts.
He coached little league in the halcyon days before parents became ever-present on the field and loved going to NY Mets games with his family.
He was a beloved father, grandfather and great grandfather.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by his son, Michael, and his daughter, Wallis, his granddaughters Michelle and Jessica, his great granddaughters Carter and Ryan Law and his great grandson Owen West.
Fond memories and expressions of sympathy may be shared at www.sbjmemorialchapel.com for the NORWORTH family.
