A mentor and a mensch.  Will always remember you.

So sad to hear about Mike's passing and my thoughts are with all his family. I knew Mike at Clark University-- and he then worked in DC for his junior year summer internship and I saw him there a lot during that time. He was a wonderful, caring friend during those college years.  He is greatly missed by so many.

I was taken from the east coast,west orange NJ in early 1964 and my memories of family back there are very slim. I was searching something else when I ran into Michael’s passing. I do see the resemblance in mikes face with my younger brother. My thoughts and prayers go out to that side of the Suesserman family. I had no idea how many relatives are on the east coast still. I still have cousins on the east coast but lost total contact with everyone when my father brought us to California. Ira Suesserman

I just learned about Mike's passing while looking for him on LinkedIn.  Thank you for leaving his profile up so that I would know.  Mike was a great boss and mentor to me as a young professional in Marketing at Pfizer, and a friend from then on.  I valued his pointed but tactful feedback early in my career, and the warmth of every interaction with him. Dear Mike’s beloved family. I was just informed of Mike’s passing. Like many, I had the honor of working with Mike at Pfizer. One is for sure for you,  you have your Pfizer family always supporting and praying for you. Mike displayed professionalism and grace in all he did. He was not opposed to alternate points of view, and I believe this to be a underlying theme to all I’ve read from my former colleagues below. God’s speed Mike. God has an outstanding Angel. Today I learned of Mike's passing and regret deeply that I had not kept in touch.  Working with him at Pfizer and consulting with him through his time at Cello was so rewarding both personally and professionally.  His ability to lead with warmth, grace, and deep experience was apparent to everyone who knew him and he is greatly missed. 


Michael and I worked at Pfizer together and I was always touched by his generosity of spirit. He always was willing to give his time and presence.  I remember one day we were talking about how he could leverage his strategic thinking skills more and he said "Lisa you want me to just sit at my desk and think? People will think I am not doing anything."  

The tapestry of his life was cut too short but the thing I will always remember was his dedication to his family. He loved them very much and talked about them constantly.

I hope in heaven he is playing his guitar and smiling his bright smile.

I grew up with Mike - as family friends, we spent many fun times together.  One that stands out, was a New Years Eve spent at their house in CT.  We went to a party and had a blast.  Mike and I reconnected when he was working at Pfizer, we had lunch a couple of times.  We lost touch again, as life gets in the way, but I will always remember him fondly. I knew Mike from grad school. (Indiana University MBA '92) And even though we haven't been in contact, I will remember him fondly as such a good guy, wry sense of humor and that smile. I send my deepest sympathy to his family. His passing no doubt leaves a very big hole.

Dear Caren and family, I had the honor and pleasure to know Mike during and after our time working at Pfizer.  In the fast-moving and rapid world that we called Pfizer HQ, Mike was a calm and very focused leader.  I never worked on his team but he still took time out to meet with me on a regular basis to provide guidance and mentorship.  I saw him last summer as we met at his office at Regeneron to catch up after many years.  As always he was positive and really optimistic about our industry and life in general.  My thoughts and prayers are with his entire family.  I will miss him very much.  God Bless his soul. 

I had the honor of being Mike's Executive Coach when he was at Pfizer, an experience that turned into a long friendship that transcended his transition from Pfizer to other exciting professional challenges.  A kinder, funnier, smarter, more thoughtful, and more engaging partner no one could ever wish for.  
I was stunned to learn today from another Pfizer Colleague, Debbie Walters, of Mike's untimely passing, as we had lost touch during the past few years.   I am grieving tonight in Colorado thinking of him and his family -- whom I know he adored -- and how much they will miss him.  Prayers and much love to all of you for whom there is now a big gaping hole which the memories of the finest father, son, husband, friend, and colleague can only partially fill.

   I didn’t even know I had relatives back east until my wife’s relatives sent a newspaper with Herbert’s picture.  When back east in 2002 my wife and I had dinner with Mike and Herbert. We had such a great time meeting Mike that we didn’t want the evening together to end.  Although I never had the chance to get to know him better I always had hopes of that happening.  We did stay in touch occasionally by email.  It seems he touched many people in a positive way.  Our condolences to your family.

I first met Mike at Pfizer during the Northeast blackout when we squished into a rental car for Nash’s wild ride to Westchester. Though it certainly wasn’t funny at the time, we laughed about it forever after. It was always such a pleasure working with Mike on new products and licensing opportunities and I greatly valued his insights and judgement. Post Pfizer, we enjoyed meeting for coffee and discussing our lives, both professionally and personally. He was a real mensch and will be sorely missed. May his family and friends take comfort in wonderful memories.

In fact, one of Mike’s first assignment was to help my diabetes team way back in the early 1990s. I had the pleasure of working with and for Mike at Regeneron over the past 5 years and I can honestly say he was one of the kindest, most genuine and sweetest people I have known. He always made time for me, listened, and advised well when I needed it. Mike gave his all to the company, but nothing comes close to the love and devotion he had for his precious family. You were his world and he was so proud and in love with you. I admired Mike for his strength, his grace and his character. A real mensch! Like so many, I knew Mike through Pfizer, getting to work with him in the Lipitor days and later getting to be his coach for a bit.  His love of family just jumped off the page whenever we talked about how he approached work and life.  Deeply principled, intelligent and insightful, he was most of all a wonderful human being. Mike and I worked together during our early days at Pfizer, he was actually my first boss.   During our days and years together, there were many life lessons--But, none more important than his commitment to family and faith.  Both of which are ones that I try to role model today.

Mike and I spent many years together collaborating between sales and marketing at Pfizer and I always appreciated his directness, his thoughtful approach and his ability to truly listen.   He sincerely wanted to hear my perspective and to make the most well informed decision possible.  He was an authentic human being who had that rare skill to remember the important things about you as an individual even if he had not seen you in a while.   I saw him at Regeneron a couple of times where we sat and had a coffee and it was just like old times.  You will be truly missed.

As many here, I knew Mike from my 10 years at Pfizer. He was an inspiring leader and just a great guy. I have known Mike since our early days at Pfizer.  He was a fantastic colleague and a wonderful person.  I am very glad that I got to know him both professionally and personally.  My deepest condolences.

My deepest condolences to Caren and the kids.   Very sad news.  
I ran into Mike from time to time at Pfizer over the years, but I first had an opportunity to get to know him in 1996 on a JAMA ski trip.  When Mike left Pfizer for a  gig downtown, we were able grab coffee a couple times and stay in touch.  More recently when he was part of the Pfizer diaspora to Regeneron we were able to  breakfast together a couple times a year.  The last time I saw Mike was in September, he was in good sprints, but was having a tough time with his medications.  The things that I will miss about Mike are his directness coupled with a rye sense of humor, and his devotion to family.  Great guy that will be sorely missed.  

Like almost all of the other replies, I knew Mike through PFE.  While we never had the opportunity to work together directly I knew Mike to be one of the most engaging, smart and friendly members of the PFE family.  My connection to Mike was through our numerous discussions about skiing which he and I loved to do with our families.  I mentioned to Mike one year in the 1990's about my family experiences skiing in Steamboat Springs and how family oriented it was.  He, in turn, took his family to Steamboat on numerous occasions and raved about the family time together.
Mike, you will be missed! 

I had the pleasure of knowing Mike at Pfizer and met with him a few times after. The service yesterday was so moving and I learned more amazing things about Mike I had not known..a man so dedicated to his family and the zest for life!

What a gift it was to know Mike.  He had that rare and beautiful combination of being principled, yet understanding and flexible.  Strong and determined, yet caring and compassionate. I consider that time transformational for me both professionally and personally, and Mike was always there to offer support, guidance, and most of all perspective. Mike was a true mentor and friend to me and so many others who were lucky to know him. I will always remember his charm, humor, intellect, and am grateful for the confidence he instilled in me and the friendship we shared. I first met Mike in the early 90’s; we started our careers around the same time at Pfizer.  It was such a great time to be at Pfizer and we enjoyed our time together both at work and socially.  I was lucky enough to have worked with Mike in Market Research and then again on the Lipitor launch.  My good friends actually named their daughter Marly after meeting Mike and Caren and hearing them talk about their newborn daughter Marly.  We also shared a passion for fly fishing and often talked about getting out together on the stream; I now regret we never made that happen.  My deepest condolences to his family; the world lost a great guy. 

Mike was my hiring manager into Pfizer over 12 years ago. He took a chance bringing me in from outside the industry and opened so many doors for me. I still remember how he navigated complex issues and found a way to cut to the chase and make decisions much more simple. Mike brought joy to the office, always smiling, always a champion for us. We live on the upper east side and I remember Mike telling me a long time ago he used to live in the neighborhood and used to walk under the 59th street bridge on his way home. For some reason that stuck with me and for years, since Mike left for Regeneron, I always think of him every time we walk under the bridge. He will be missed, but we won't stop thinking of him.

Caren, Marly, Jake, Izzy and the cats:  Today’s service was one of the most heartfelt and beautiful I have ever attended.  The outpouring of love, and memories of such a beautiful, talented and genuine human being were tremendous.  Missing was exactly what Caren said—the ability to share a real hug and shed a tear in the same room.  

Mike and I spent years and years together at Pfizer, and I have so many memories that will never fade.  We were S’man and S’mann and that will always be our special bond. As will the insane concert of Full Metal Jacket that he dragged me to.  When I asked him was it heavy metal he said “No,  but it might be loud.”  My ears are still ringing.  

He was a dad first...and a husband also first..and a son, brother, brother-in-law, uncle, friend also first—he was always there for everyone.  As Marly and Jake said, he will always be there for each of you, as he loved you more than life itself.

I had the privilege of working with Mike both at Pfizer and at Regeneron over the last 3 years.   Mike was a leader to be proud of and a man of great integrity.   I will simply say that he was a pleasure to work with.  A true gentleman.   While these are difficult circumstances to have to say good bye to someone that clearly meant so much to so many,  I would like to compliment the family on sharing such heartfelt tributes.  I don't know that I have attended any funeral in person that showed as much love and honor as this one did.  My deepest sympathies.  

Caren, Marley and Jake, I am so terribly sorry for your loss. I am sad that one of the best humans was taken from us so soon. Mike was and continues to be a shining beacon for me. One of fondest memories of Mike was back in 2009. I had a hair appointment to put in my weave and I went to tell Mike that I needed to leave early for said weave appointment. I am sure you can imagine he was intrigued by what a 'weave' was so needless to say, he researched it thoroughly, came to work the next day to regale me with tales of all the stars who he learned had weaves and with a glint in his eye! To this day, I smile when I think of that moment. I will always treasure the time we spent together at work, walking to GCT and how he always made time, night or day to talk through any issues or ideas. Mike loved you all with all his heart and it was something he reinforced with me as I started my own family.  While we cannot be with you to comfort you during this time, please know that as soon as restrictions are lifted, we will come to celebrate the wonderful man that Mike is.

I have worked with Michael for many years at Pfizer and in very different work environments.  Michael was an exceptional individual who garnered the respect of all and the affection of many. 

What a tragic loss. Mike was one of the first people I worked with during my time in Pfizer marketing. I learned so very much from him, the basics of marketing that a neophyte like me needed to learn, and some of the more nuanced, insightful elements of strategic marketing. We stayed in touch after he left Pfizer, although I lost touch him when he joined Regeneron. 

I will always cherish my time at Pfizer, on Lipitor and having had the opportunity to work with and learn from people like Mike. Deepest condolences to Caren, Marly and Jake.

In the short time I knew Michael it was clear he loved his family and made every decision with them in mind. I just wish that I could have shook his hand.

I was fortunate to work with Mike at Pfizer and then became friends outside of work over a mutual love of acoustic guitar and music.  As a colleague, I learned from his measured, strategic approach, his skill at asking a great question, and his professionalism .  As a friend and fellow musician, he  was open and giving in his friendship and music, and always shared an easy smile with a certain twinkle in his eye.  And he had a pretty decent singing voice as one of our recordings of Sweet Virginia can attest.  Mike, you left an indelible mark and will be truly missed.  To Caren and family, our deepest sympathy and thoughts are with you during this difficult time.

Both my wife Leighton and I worked with Mike during his days at Pfizer.  We found him to be both the most professional colleague, and also a sincerely warm human being who always had a moment to share information that made our life easier.  Mike and his wife for a time lived  in our neighborhood, and when we first arrived,  he shared  information about many great restaurants and services in our area.  Mike and Leighton often traded book recommendations for his wife, as well as their love of music.  Leighton still has saved CD's that Mike made for her related to new music he was listening to.  Leighton  said it best, when she said "Mike was a real Mensch" 

Mike & I first met in the elevator of our apartment building on East 28th Street, after noticing the familiar Pfizer logo on each of our bags. We went on to share several rainy day taxis, years of work together on Customer Advocacy & Lipitor, an Eric Clapton concert & more Twizzler licorice than I care to admit. Over the years, I could always count on Mike for a kind word, a bright idea, a supportive thought & a warm laugh. He will be terribly missed by all those who had the good fortune to know him. May his memory be a blessing.

Mike was such a wonderful colleague.  We started at Regeneron five years ago around the same time and I had the pleasure of working with him on many projects over the years.  He was always kind and thoughtful.  He often expressed how much he loved his family and how proud he was of his kids.  He was brave and always so positive.  He will be truly missed.

The world has lost a beautiful soul.  I was fortunate to have worked with Mike both at Pfizer and then at Regeneron, where we became friends as well as colleagues.  When I heard that Mike was being considered for a position at Regeneron I was thrilled because Mike always stood out as an exemplary professional - smart, creative, dedicated to his company and his team, rational, level-headed and committed to doing the right thing.  He loved life fully and loved nothing more than Caren, Marly & Jake, whom he talked about often.  We shared a love for music and the Grateful Dead and I will miss his warm smile and genuine friendship.  I’ve never known anyone to face a challenge so daunting with so much positivity, strength, determination and concern for others.  He was a gem and will be sorely missed.

I only knew Mike for a few years after continuing my career at Regeneron Pharmaceuticals.  He impressed me with his consistent "voice of reason."  It's such an under-rated quality, yet so essential to being a strong leader like Mike.  My deepest sympathy to his family - he will be missed in so many ways.

I was fortunate to get to know Mike after joining Regeneron.  Mike consistently reminded me of the power of positivity.  Our first conversation covered our mutual love of music, the IU / Purdue rivalry, and his love of Tom Petty.

During the hard times, Mike was always an optimistic, calming influence.  Even when the irrationality of a situation was at its starkest, Mike remained upbeat.  I was inspired when I last spoke with him that he approached his illness with that same spirit.

I had the pleasure to work with Mike at Pfizer for many years, and I consider him one of my mentors. He gave me a wonderful opportunity to head up the Ophthalmology Therapeutic Area, he was a great boss, calm and always supportive. This shaped my future.  
Most recently we had been in touch to connect him with alumni and other colleagues to access new treatment options for him.  He was always positive, and my day was brightened by hearing from him through a short text or brief phone call.  
We have lost a great friend, colleague and a mensch.  My condolences to Caren, his children and the extended Suesserman family. 



I worked for Mike for a brief period of time at Pfizer. He was a great guy. He loved music and we often chatted about our musical interests and I was always astonished to hear about all the music venues he would go to in NYC during a week! He introduced me to My Morning Jacket and told my husband he should take a second look at The Who. Mike was a genuinely decent person who touched my life. 

I have known Mike for almost 4 years.  He was a devoted Regeneron colleague who became a good friend.  Mike spoke fondly of his family and was so proud of Marly and Jake.  We will all miss him.  He truly was a special person.  Deepest condolences to his family.

I have known Micheal through work  for over  twenty years . Over the past couple of years we became friends through our love of music. 
He has shared with me how proud he was of his children, as he spoke about them often.
Micheal will be greatly missed. My condolences go out to his family and friends.

So sad to hear this beautiful soul has left us. I was so blessed to work for him at Pfizer for 13 years (lucky 13) and to call him my friend.  I will miss his kind, gentle spirit. Rest In Peace, Mike. You were one special guy. 

I am so sorry to hear about Mike.  I worked with him at Pfizer over the years.  We spent 48 hours together driving back to NY after the events of September 11th.  Really got to know him well.  He was a great guy.   May the good memories keep you going during this difficult time.
