Mildred Friedman passed away on Saturday, March 30, 2024, in her home in Oakland Gardens, NY. She was 101 years old. She was pre-deceased by her beloved husband, Leonard, to whom she was married for 57 years.
Mildred was born in Manhattan in 1922. She attended Hunter College High School & Hunter College. Following graduation, she worked as a proofreader for a major publishing company. She later earned a master's degree in education and worked as an elementary school teacher in Queens. Upon retirement, she volunteered as a docent at the Museum of Modern Art. She was beloved and admired by friends and family.
Reform Judaism has always been important to Mildred, whether attending services, serving on Temple committees, or being involved and supporting the community through monetary contributions and donated time. Her many interests in temple life included Sisterhood, Ritual Committee and Choir.
Mildred is survived by her daughter, Ellen (Robert) Sapinkopf, and son, Vinson (Judith) Friedman, and her grandchildren, Andrew, Scott, Melanie & Rachel (Dan), She is also survived by numerous nieces & nephews, great nieces & nephews, and great-great nieces & nephews.
Mildred leaves behind a legacy of love and will be deeply missed by all that knew her.
Contributions in Mildred's memory can be made to the Leonard & Mildred Friedman Scholarship Fund, Reform Temple of Forest Hills, 71-11 112 Street, Forest Hills, NY 11375. This fund provides scholarships to help children attend Union of Reform Judaism (URJ) workshops, programs and camps to further their knowledge and participation in the Reform Jewish Movement.
A funeral service for Mildred will be held Monday, April 1, 2024 at 1:00 PM at Schwartz Brothers-Jeffer Memorial Chapels, 114-03 Queens Blvd, Forest Hills, NY 11375.
Following the funeral service will be a committal service at Beth Moses Cemetery, 1500 Wellwood Avenue, West Babylon, NY 11704. Cantor Deborah Jacobson to officiate.
