Our beloved mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, Muriel Garry, peacefully passed away in the early morning hours of Sunday January 5, 2025. She was a little more than two months shy of her 101st birthday.
Muriel grew up in the Bronx. She was in the first graduating class of women from Hunter college. Muriel was fond of telling the story that when asked by her college advisor what degree she was studying for, she answered, “ I want my M.R.S. “.
Muriel achieved her dream at the tender age of 20 when she married Samuel Garry. They were great partners on the dance floor and in life.
Together they raised their three children in Queens NY where they lived throughout 68 years of marriage.
Although family, and not career, was her main focus, Muriel was a brilliant woman with a keen mind, who did the NYTimes crossword puzzle daily well into her 90’s. She was a wise investor in the stock market, financially savvy and generous to her children.
After college she worked as a drafts woman at Bell labs on radar during WW II. After raising her children she went back to work as a bookkeeper and administrator. When helping her son Alan in his office, all clients paid their bills in a timely fashion…Muriel made sure of that!
Muriel paid great attention to the small details; she was always beautifully put together, well-traveled, and made the best Hamantaschen.
She was also very determined, opinionated, and not shy to share her preferences. But she made all her family, whom she loved deeply, feel very special.
Muriel will always be remembered with pride and love by her children, Alan, Leigh and Susan; her daughter-in-laws Andrea and Sherryl, her granddaughter Ashley, grandsons Matthew (& wife Lauren), Jonah (& wife Margot); Ethan, and Jason (fiancé Megan) ; and her great grandchildren Shoshana and Shiloh.
