Oscar was a great man.  I remember the first time I met him and Mildred was at a family event.  I had only been dating his granddaughter, Suzanne, for a couple of years, but he treated me like I was family.  Every time I spoke with him, he expressed genuine interest in my life and in the lives of my family.  I am so glad he was able to witness Suzanne and I get married.  I do regret that he will not be able to welcome his second great grandchild into this world.  Oscar lived a great life and he will be missed. I would have loved to spend some time with Oscar-- he seemed quite a character!  I will have to settle for the stories about him-- hope to hear many more.  Love and peace to you at this time.

Dear Helane & Family:

I am so sorry to hear of your loss!!  Please know that my thoughts are with you.

Oscar was a class act.  I remember being welcome into his home back in the 80's with Dave and Helane and having my first ever taste of matzo ball soup homemade by Mildred (it was great).  Susan and I have always thought of Oscar as a member of our family.  Perpetually a gratious gentleman.  We too shall miss him.

Where do I begin?   My first memory of Oscar was in 1971 when Helane and I visited him and Mildred at their 197 St. apartment during a college break.  We were unmarried at the time, but living together -- a fact that did not go unnoticed on Mildred.  Oscar, on the other hand, was very accepting.  I will never forget him bending ove mer, smoking a cigar, as he watching in amazement as I changed the oil in my 1965 VW bug.  Our relationship grew from that moment.  Oscar always seemed to respect us and our life.  Several aspects of Oscar's character stand out in my memory:  he was a classy dresser, and always impressed me with his sense of style in clothing; he was not a conversationalist, but, nevertheless, had a few, choice phrases that he often used with great significance, such as "use it in good health," "it's a ripoff," and referring to our cabin as "the shack;"  he was very generous with his money, but exceptionally frugal when it came to spending any of it on himself; he was a great pool player, with an incredibly soft and deft touch that often put me to shame, even well into his 90's; his reputation on the dance floor, and with women, was legend, and, although I often tried to copy his style, I never have been adept enough to have his timing; and, while he didn't write, was not a reader, didn't take pictures and was not a student of the arts, he left a legacy that I think about almost every day -- he made my wedding ring.  I think of him almost every time I look at my left hand.  Thanks, Dad.
