Sarah Berman, loving wife, mother, and grandmother died peacefully at home surrounded by family on Wednesday, September 11, 2024. Sarah was raised by her parents, Helen and Izzy of blessed memory, in the Rockaways. She met the love of her life, Stewart, in 1960 and married him in 1966. They spent 58 years together and never lost their spark, raising three children and spoiling four grandchildren.
Sarah earned her bachelor’s degree in early childhood education at Mills College of Education and worked with children of all means, sharing her love for music, storytelling, and life as a nursery school teacher and director. She also played the piano at all her children’s birthday parties making them the best of the neighborhood.
During college she bonded with a group that would become known as the foursome: Larry, Sheila, Jeanne, and Joel. They shared many adventures together over the years. They, her Aunt Phyllis, and her sister Dana brought out her love of life.
Sarah liked attending MoMA art openings and special movie screenings. She loved attending Broadway musicals. She felt that culture was an important part of education and living a full life. She was particularly fond of films from the Golden Age of Hollywood and would quote them regularly at just the right moments. She was always quick with a witty comment or a look that said it all.
Sarah stood up for the underdog and fought for the things she believed in. She once met Mayor LaGuardia when she got approved for the installment of a traffic light at a busy intersection for the safety of the children in the neighborhood.
Sarah is survived by her husband Stewart, her three children, Alisa, Franklin, and Shari, her loving sons-in-law and daughter-in-law, David, Chris, and Tina, as well as her four grandchildren Sydney, Hayden, Isabel, and Hannah. Donations in her name can be made to the Alzheimer’s Association and random acts of kindness in her name are encouraged.
