Steve was born April 13, 1945 in Brooklyn, NY, and graduated from Long Island University with a BS in Finance. He began his banking career in 1965 at J. P. Morgan in the Corporate Trust Department. Subsequently, Steve joined the Bank’s U.S. Private Banking Division where he was responsible for the banking and investment needs of high net worth individuals, non-profit organizations, and privately-held firms. Steve left in 1986 to join Security Pacific’s Merchant Bank where he was Vice President/Manager of Mortgage Trading & Finance. In 1989, Steven joined The Boston Company in New York as Senior Vice President and Senior Credit Officer. A few years later, he moved to the Bank’s parent company, Lehman Brothers, as Senior Executive Vice President. In 1994, Steve decided to leave finance temporarily to serve as a delegate to the United Nations for the Republic of Bosnia & Herzegovina. In 1995, Steve served as Managing Partner of Van Eck Global, a mutual fund company. Since July 2015, Steve has been serving as a board member of National Event Company.
In his spare time, Steve enjoyed coaching young entrepreneurs through the local Nevada Small Business Bureau and spending time and traveling with family and friends. He enjoyed theater, was an avid reader of biographies and had a keen interest in collectibles and artwork.
Steve is survived by his wife of 48 years, Barbara (Barsky), his brother Harvey and sister-in-law, Sylvia. He was predeceased by his sister, Sally Lefkowitz. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.
A Memorial Service will be held at Congregation Ner Tamid on Sunday April 2, 2017 at 2 PM. In lieu of flowers, donations in Steve’s memory can be made to The Richard Shlofmitz Foundation St. Francis Hospital 100 Port Washington Blvd Roslyn, NY 11576.
