Born in Gelsenkirchen, Germany, the son of Paul and Ilsa Eichengrun, Warren escaped Nazi Germany with his sister Laura when he was nine years old as part of the Kindertransport following Kristallnacht (the night of broken glass). Warren and Laura (nee Gabriel) first landed in England where they spent much of World War II before moving to the Riverside section of Manhattan, N.Y., where they were reunited with their parents.
Warren served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. It was there that he met Ernie Scott who would later become his singing partner in the duo known as “Scott and Oaks”. In the 1950s they had a top 10 hit on Cat Records called “Tick Tock”. The “B” side of the record was the song “It Was You”. A highlight of the duo’s singing career was an engagement in the lounge at the famous Copa Cabana in New York City.
After leaving the music business Warren spent most of his career in sales at Artistic Weaving, a label manufacturer headquartered in the Empire State Building. He was an avid (and excellent) skier and golfer.
Warren is survived by daughters Wendy and Andrea Oakes as well as stepchildren Nancy, Linda and Richard Harvey as well as five grandchildren. He was pre-deceased by his wife Marian Harvey.
