Alex was born to William and Elizabeth Socholotuk on May 20, 1923 at Mine Center, Ontario. He attended elementary school at Mine Centre and high school in Fort Frances. Following his graduation, he joined the Canadian Armed Forces and served valiantly in the air force during the Second World War. Upon his return from overseas, he worked for a brief period for JA Mathieu Lumber and Shevlin Clark. He spent the majority of his working days (39 ½ years) employed as a stationary engineer with the paper mill in Fort Frances.
He was united in marriage with Mary Boyda on January 30, 1947. Together they raised two sons, Richard and Allen and daughter Sharen.
Alex was an avid fisherman and hunter. His most cherished moments were those spent with friends and family in the great outdoors…whether it be picking pinecones, berries or mushrooms. There was never a new road that went unexplored by Alex and Mary and he had extensive knowledge of the area between Banning and Dryden. Alex’s favourite haunts were highway 502 and Big Saw Bill Lake. He was a man of all seasons and spent part of each in nature’s wonderland.
Alex enjoyed volunteering his time at the St. George’s Greek Orthodox Church, The Fort Frances Community Credit Union, The Fort Frances Sportsmen’s Club, The Fort Frances Canadian Bass Championship, to name a few.
He was predeceased by: his mother and father, parents-in-law Eudokia and Carl Wojick, sister Mary Soderholm, brother-in-law Oiva Soderholm, brother Jack Socholotuk, sister-in-law Stella Socholotuk, sister June Wodell, brother-in-law Jerry Wodell, wife Mary and daughter Sharen.
He is survived by: sons Richard (Tracy Gibson), Allen (Josee Gaudreault), brother Stan and family, brother Gary and family, grandsons Christopher and Michael Socholotuk (Helen), great grandchildren Neven and Lydia, eight step-great-grandchildren and a multitude of nieces and nephews.
A ‘tough old soldier’ has gone on to his greater reward and will be deeply missed for his sense of humor, generosity and strength of character.
