Dettmar was born on June 3, 1931, in Tunnischken, Kreis Elchniederung to Max and Anna Ruppenstein in East Prussia, Germany. During World War II he fled with his parents to Schleswig-Holstein. He was united in marriage to Sieglinde Keller on August 14, 1959. Together they built a beautiful life with their seven children while he achieved his Masters in Gardening and Landscaping. Following their faith, they immigrated to Canada in 1983, settling in Devlin, establishing a family landscaping business. Dettmar loved spending time with his family; sharing his faith, stories, and love of music. He was an avid reader, played several instruments and composed memoirs on his computer that were regularly published in the German periodical “Die Elchniederung”.
