OBITUARY

Edwin Hector Gouliquer

November 18, 1944September 8, 2020

It is with great sadness that the family of Edwin Hector Gouliquer announces his passing on Tuesday, September 8, 2020 after a brief battle with cancer. He was blessed with the support of his wife Gail, daughter Therese, son-law Grant and granddaughter Katherine, who were at his side through every step of his illness. Ed was born on November 18, 1944 in Rainy River, Ontario to Hector and Irene Gouliquer. He grew up on the family farm near Pinewood, helping his father with the raising of livestock as well as logging. After he received his driver’s license, he hauled pulpwood to Fort Frances. He also worked for the George Armstrong Company in Fort Frances. He was united in marriage to Gail Alexander on July 22, 1966 and shortly after they moved to Atikokan where he worked for Caland Ore until its closing. After the mine closed, they started Ed’s Cat Service and built Will-He-Wiggle Bait Farm on Highway 11B, which was the home of the Arctic Cat Snowmobile and Lund Boat dealerships for Atikokan. He also sold Husqvarna and Jonsered chainsaws and repaired and serviced a multitude of small engines. He worked for Ontario Hydro, Division of Lines and Stations, as well as in Marathon for various contractors throughout his career and retired from the O.P.G. Generating Station in Atikokan as an electrician. He leaves behind his wife Gail Gouliquer; son Edwin Gouliquer (Ann Marie); daughter Therese Gouliquer (Grant Painter); granddaughters Chantele Gouliquer (Matthew), Kaitlyn Gouliquer, Katherine Painter, Alyssa Perlette and Morgan Painter; great grandsons Wyatt and Levi; father Hector Gouliquer; mother-in-law Muriel Alexander; sisters Brenda (Jerry) Whalen, Wanda (Terry) Papadakis; brother-in-law Wilton Desserre as well as numerous nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins. Ed was predeceased by his mother Irene Gouliquer, sisters Deanna Desserre and Jane Gouliquer and his father-in-law Norman Alexander. Due to COVID-19 restrictions, a private family interment will be held in North Branch Cemetery. If friends so desire, in memoriam, donations may be made to the Atikokan General Hospital, 120 Dorothy Street, Atikokan, ON, P0T 1C0 or the Canadian Cancer Society, 1093 Barton Street, Thunder Bay, ON, P7B 5N3.

“Eddy” was my friend of 50 years. To say he was unique would be an understatement. His technical abilities and talents were limitless. His advice on small motors and the like was sought by countless numbers from far and wide. He was a man of the land. His respect for, and love of animals, particularly dogs, often outweighed that for other people. He was an architect, designer, engineer, mechanic, heavy equipment operator, farmer and fisherman, all wrapped up in one very complex human being.
He will be sadly missed by those of us who knew him, and by those of us who were often the target of his practical jokes, and who travelled with him on countless adventures.
My sincere condolences to all his family, and to his dogs who will be lost without him.

I remember when my parents bought my Kitty Cat snow machine From Ed's Cat in Atikokan, I was so excited that I could not wait to share it with my best Friend Kari Miller. As the years went on I got to know Ed more and more and got to learn that he had a nick name frog in French (grenouille). Ed always had a laugh from time to time with my parents as well as he referred to in french, that my mom was the Female frog in french and she called him Crapo which was the male frog I guess. It seemed the meeting place for me and Ed was down town at the post office where I would seem him most of the time once in while at foodland and always in his coveralls . Like most other people I know in town, I most likely met Ed on the snowmobiel trails with my parents, back then when the times were fun such, as rides to the White Otter Castle the things like that. Also sending my condolences to the family as well.

Gail, Edwin , Therese and families,
I spent a lot of time with Ed when I was younger. He was a great cousin to me and he was always so kind. His sense of humour was so infectious and he always greeted anyone he came to visit with that big grin on his face. He was a loyal friend and would help anyone that was in need. Please know that we are all thinking about you right now. Our hearts and prayers go out to all of you during this difficult time.
