It is with great sadness that the family of Greta Doreen Eide announces her peaceful passing on Saturday, November 23, 2019 with family by her side. She was born on September 30, 1934 in Stratton, ON to Caroline and Hugh McMillan. Sadly, her mother passed away during childbirth, Greta was fortunate to be adopted by the midwife who delivered her, Clara Sparks and her husband Walter. Clara and Walter raised Greta while keeping her connected with her 13 siblings, who were raised by numerous aunts and uncles after the loss of their mother. Greta became the family historian, keeping track of all her siblings and their families. Greta worked at the CN Beanery as a young woman; it was here that she met Basil Eide. They were united in marriage on February 24, 1956. Greta continued to work until the birth of their first child, Twyla then settled into her role of housewife, doting on her children and grandchildren. She was an active member of the community, volunteering with the LaVerendrye Hospital Ladies Auxiliary, Hydro Retirees group, acting as unit coordinator for the Canadian Cancer Society and working with the children at McIrvine School. She loved her neighbours like family (especially the dogs) and appreciated all that they did for her even if it was just a wave on their way by. Her front yard sign said it all “All Dogs Welcome” and that they were. You could find her in the front yard raking, sweeping, shoveling or feeding anything with four legs. She and Basil enjoyed traveling all over North America and treasured a family trip to Norway and Sweden. They loved to fish and camp and spent many summers at the Bergland Park with Basil’s brother Elmer, sister Millie and families. Greta always was over the top when it came to decorating for any occasion, her grandchildren loved to see what she had instore, never too many lights, tinsel, or tchotchkes! She was predeceased by her parents Hugh and Caroline McMillan; adopted parents Walter and Clara Sparks; husband Basil Eide; Mother in law Eve Eide and Father in law Albert Eide; sisters Agnes, Christie, Dorothy, Olive, Pauline, Ruthie, Betty Lou and Maki; brothers Lloyd, Johnny, Jimmy and Doug; adopted brothers Allan, Bill and Jim; Basil’s siblings and partners. Greta will be greatly missed by her daughter Twyla and husband Mark Howarth; son Terry and wife Jennifer all of Fort Frances; grandchildren Scott, Jill, Alex and Jada; brother Rocky McMillan and wife Jeanie of Atikokan; sister-in-law Clare McGuire of Leduc, AB; Brother in law Bill Gray of Winnipeg, MB; as well as many nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, November 27, 2019 at 11 a.m. at Green Funeral Home in Fort Frances, ON with Pastor Ken Johnson officiating. The honourary pallbearers will be Greta’s family and friends. If friends so desire in memoriam donations may be made to the LaVerendrye Hospital Auxiliary, Friends of Animals or the Rainycrest Auxiliary. Dear Terry (Speed), Jen, Twyla and family,
I am so sorry to hear of Greta's passing. I have some wonderful memories of her from visiting the house when I was a teenager and even later on, bringing my own kids to toboggan on the hill to the river in the backyard. She was always so welcoming and kind. Our hearts and love are with you during this difficult time.
Sincerely,
Shelley, Bob, Joshua and Kate Cunningham

To Gretas family, my condolences. Good times when we were young, best friends next door to each other . We would sleep in the hay loft and sneak out at night, take our bikes and ride for hours in the moonlight. We had to sneak back in or Mrs. Sparks would have lectured us. She loved animals even back then and especially the horses. She was a lot of fun and a good friend.
