

Helen Jordan (Gashiiatebeek), age 79, of 1135 Fourth St. E., Fort Frances, formerly of Lac La Croix First Nation, Ontario passed away peacefully with her children and loved ones by her bedside on Thursday, August 12, 2010 at LaVerendrye General Hospital in Fort Frances, Ontario.
Helen was born March 10, 1931 in Nett Lake, Minnesota to the late Jim and Emma Ottertail. As a young girl she was raised by Helen Menson in Seine River First Nation. On September 20, 1961, Helen was united in marriage to Frank Jordan Sr. Helen worked as a Cook for the CNR for a few years. A favourite pastime were the hours she enjoyed playing bingo with family and friends. She enjoyed baking and traditional meals with her family. She also loved sewing, beadwork, and making Jingle Dresses for Pow Wows. Helen was a cultural and spiritual leader for people in the community, and had over the years taught at Seven Generations during the Fall Harvest. She was also a well known and well respected jingle dress dancer. Helen will be missed dearly by her family and friends.
Helen leaves behind her children, Alice (Rob) Chisel, Dora Ottertail (Dave Gerts), Norma Jordan (Robert Hunter), Dorothy Jordan (Leslie Morrisseau), Norman Jordan, Frank Jordan Jr., Melba Jordan, and Harvey (Thea) Jordan; grandchildren, Melvin, Sylvia, Kathy, Shawn, Greg, Jake, Richilda, Tina, Nathaniel (Shelly), Julian (Jade), Jocelyn, Jeremy, Jessica, Jared, Dakota, Shauna, Nikki, Aaron, Keyshawn, Dyson, Justice, Robbie Joe, and Journey; and numerous great grandchildren. She is also survived by one sister, Evelyn Lightfeather and many nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her husband, Frank Jordan Sr. on April 29, 2003; two brothers, Everett and Melvin; granddaughter, Marilyn; and sister, Helen Menson.
A wake was held on Sunday evening, August 15, 2010 at the Lac La Croix First Nation Roundhouse.
Funeral services were held on Monday, August 16, 2010 in the morning at the Lac La Croix First Nation Roundhouse. An Elder officiated with traditional burial in Lac La Croix First Nation Cemetery.
Active pallbearers were family members and family friends.
