He is survived by the love of his life and best friend Donna Marie (Durbin) Ewald. Together they had three daughters, referred to as Kirby’s Girls, Shanna (Steve) Godin, Jaycey (Patrick) Ewald and Alyce (Jordan) Ewald. As a family they spent countless hours in the summer at Bauffin camping, swimming and fishing. Kirby hauled his girls all over Canada and the States in the Griswald, a 1984 Winnebago. Being the original MacGyver, the Griswald was held together by whatever he could get his hands on and when the proper tool was not available, “a stick would do the trick!” When Kirby had finished exploring the land with the Griswald he took to the water on his sailboat – the Tangent –, and zipped around in Whim the dingy. Kirby and Donna enjoyed long days and overnight trips on the lake with their dog Boo.
On July 22, 2021, Kirby became a grandfather to Mila Grace Godin, a title he wore proudly. He looked forward to this new adventure and loved to show off his newest girl.
Kirby worked many years as a mechanic, millwright and jack of all trades. He owned his own business, Ewald Mechanical, where he took pride in being a fair mechanic, building himself a great list of customers, who over many years became close friends.
Kirby is predeceased by his mother (Alyssis “Elsie” Ewald); brother (Logan Ewald); mother and father-in-law (Wally and Laura Durbin); brothers-in-law (John Durbin and Calvin Durbin); and his two buddies Boo and Patch (his dogs).
He will be deeply missed by his father Robert Ewald; and his loving sisters Linda (Luther) Meberg, Connie Ewald, Carolynn (Leo) Heyens and Stacey (Dan) Godin; as well as his in-laws Valerie Anderson, Len Durbin, Susan (Don) Bodnarchuk, Gary (Lori) Durbin, Tim (Wanda) Durbin. He was a favourite uncle to many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews. Kirby always had great pride in his family, loving everyone and making sure to equally badger each member.
Kirby had a wonderful group of friends who he shared many fun memories with; snowmachine trips to Devlin and Fortune Bay, warm vacations and long road trips to Moondance Jam.
A celebration of life will be held December 4, 2021, at the Devlin Community Hall at 1:00 – 4:00 p.m. The family has asked that in lieu of flowers, guests write a memory that they have of Kirby or share pictures so that the family may make a book to reminisce about the beautiful life that Kirby lived through many different eyes.
