Hazel passed away peacefully, surrounded by her family, on Thursday, April 28, 2016 at LaVerendrye Hospital in Fort Frances, Ontario.
Hazel was born on October 13, 1916 in Cartwright, Manitoba to the late Lorne and Gertrude (Arthurs) Caul.
She was the second youngest of five and half - sister to eight, and lived most of her early years on the family farm in Devlin, Ontario.
It was there that Hazel met her Husband, Milton Neil Strachan. Hazel and Milton were married on July 14, 1937.
They settled in Box Alder, Ontario, where they partnered in establishing their homestead and raising their family of four.
In 1955 Hazel and Milton moved to Fort Frances, Ontario and spent many happy years enjoying their lovely home and gardens, hosting many boistrous and happy family events.
Sadly, Hazel lost her longtime love in 1997. After Dad’s death Mom spent six year in the family home.
She then moved to Thunder Bay, Ontario in 2003, where she was lovingly attended and cared for by her treasured daughter, Judy.
Mom and Judy enjoyed travelling back and forth between Thunder Bay and Fort Frances to visit with family and friends,
and rarely missed an important event in any of Hazel’s many grandchildren, great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren’s lives.
Her family will remember Hazel as a devoted and giving soul who shared her love for life with all, in her own special way.
She was a hard worker for all of her life, from her early days of managing the farm to time spent employed at Rainycrest, and beyond to her later years in retirement.
Mom was a bundle of energy and there was little that could keep her down. She remained vibrant and engaged with her family right up until a few days before her passing.
Left to mourn are Hazel’s sons Milton (Carol) and Jim (Joyce), her daughter Judy DeLapp, and daughter in law Audrey (Jim) Whitman.
Sadly, Hazel lost her youngest son Wayne in 1967 at the age of 25 years old.
