Kegwechigabo (Mukwa Doodem) Norman McGinnis Sr., aged 80 of Fort Frances, Ontario and formerly of Rainy River First Nations, Ontario passed away on Sunday, June 23, at LaVerendrye Hospital in Fort Frances with his family by his side.
Norman was born on December 6, 1932 at Rainy River First Nations, Ontario to the late Harold and Margaret McGinnis. Norman had worked as a logger and as a fire fighter crew boss for the MNR. Was a natural born story teller and loved going for long walks which he did every day. He lived a quiet and reserved life style. He never hesitated to act in the capacity of Anishinabe Elder when asked to.
Left to cherish his memories is his wife Jean and 7 children, Valerie (Alfred) Fisher of Kenora, ON, Lester (Jean) of Duluth, MN, Leslie of Toronto, ON, Patrick of Toronto, ON, Jane Stoneypoint of Thunder Bay, ON, Phyllis McDonald of Barrie, ON and Sharon Dorman-Lucia of Duluth, MN. Also surviving are grandchildren Darold, Melvin, Christopher, Dade, Lindsey, Christopher, Jiselle, Freddie, Wiley, Jared, Daniel and Mason, five great grandchildren, Jayden, Sierra, Quintin, Brady and Casey, his sister Jean Anderson and her children Geraldine, Dennis, Gerry and Steve, sister-in-law Genevive McGinnis and her children Sonny, Leona, Beverly and Willie James, sister-in-law Annie McGinnis and her children, Larry, Wayne, Wynn, Roberta, Carolyn, Merlin, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his parents Harold and Margaret McGinnis sons Norman Jr. and Robert, daughter Margaret Judith, his infant daughter, siblings Elizabeth, Alice, Harold and Ronald.
Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, June 26, 2013 at 10:00 a.m.at Green Funeral Home in Fort Frances. Reverend Mr. Bob Grynol will officiate followed by interment in the Rainy River First Nations Cemetery on the hill.
Friends may visit Tuesday evening, June 25 from 6:00 until 9:00 p.m. at Green Funeral Home with Vigil Prayers being offered at 6:30 p.m.
The active pallbearers will be Larry McGinnis, Sonny McGinnis, Justin McGinnis, Doug Horton, Al Wilson and Alfred Fisher.
The honourary pallbearers will be Josie Potson, Dwayne McGinnis, Wynn McGinnis, Merlin McGinnis, Leona McGinnis, Beverly McGinnis, Willie James and Jim Wood.
