I wrote this for Brian’s funeral and wanted to share it with all of you on this day of remembrance:

My name’s Patrick and I’ve known Brian for 57 years since the age of five, we grew up together in Jackson Heights, New York; his mom taught me how to read.

We studied together every day after school, scribbling on each other’s homework and even stabbing each other with pencils. We fought and made up. We were like brothers.

Ah, Brian, I can’t believe you’re gone.

There are many things for which Brian will be remembered, but what we’ll never forget is his sense of humor, his love for life and his bringing smiles to people’s face’s.

Do you remember those moments when he’d introduce himself to someone who didn’t know him… “Hi. Brian G Reidy” and give you them that grin of his that went from ear to ear. And what you and they heard was I’m Brian GEEEEEEEEEEE Reidy, like “GEE ain’t today grand!”. He made people happy, he made them smile. He reminded you of the decency in humanity.

He loved life, he loved sports, Disney, Mickey Mouse and Minnie Mouse, big steaks, good scotch, good beer and music. 

He was a big fan of the band Genesis.

So, I went and listened to some of their songs and found these lyrics in one of their best-known songs:  Land of Confusion and in it I heard Brian:

This is the world we live in
And these are the hands we're given
Use them and let's start trying
To make it a place worth living in

And he lived those words, he defended criminals, the downtrodden, the innocent, because he believed in Justice for All.

He loved you Debbie, with all his heart and I can’t imagine what you must feel. But like all of us, let’s remember that smile, that grin, that wonderful human being called Brian G. Reidy.

We love you Brian, you’ll be missed but not forgotten …

Can't believe its been almost six months since such a wonderful fellow passed miss you Liz

Brian was my career-long mentor and friend.  It bittersweet to say goodbye to him in this life, but now we have an angel who watched over us in this life and who will always be with us in spirit.  

My favorite memory of Brian is when he was my supervisor in my first year as an Assistant Public Defender and we were dealing with an un reasonable judge who was not considering the humanity of our clients.  I was in the courthouse hall, feeling very disappointed, and Brian came over and told me, "Annie, cheer up, it's going to be ok.  Besides, there's no no crying in public defendering.  He gave a big laugh and then whispered to me, "Except when there is."  As we talked about what to  do, I said that several of the cases would probably negotiate pleas in front of the trial pool judge (a practice that the relinquishing judge abhorred).  Brian cracked a huge smile and bellowed, "Gee, I hate it when people plea in the pool!"  We made it through that day and many other difficult days, but Brian never gave up in tireless fight for the underdogs.  If there ever was someone who could become the patron saint of public defendering, it is Brian Reidy.  I love you, Brian.

Dear Debra and Family,                                                                                       
 Brian had a wonderful sense of humor and his laugh was contagious. I have grown up with Brian around me as a big brother type of person in my life, knowing him since I was about 5 years old. His parents, BSO Court Deputy Jerry Reidy and lovely Rita, were like 2nd parents to me and always showed their caring ways to me and our family.  They adored Brian and his sense of humor surely came from his father who also always had a great joke and story in an Irish Brogue.  Brian would always stop to talk with me and had a positive thing to say to me about what I was doing and how my life and career were going. He had a kind way about him yet he was a sharp trial attorney and fought for his clients. His laugh was contagious and I will still hear it when I think of him and that will make me smile and his parents will undoubtedly smile down from heaven as well. The planet will miss Brian and so will we all. Dear my friend Brian,
     I am so very sad to know I will never be able to hear your voice, your encouraging words and most definitely, your laugh and smile, I don’t believe I never saw you without those beautiful characteristics, God blessed you with that gift.  
My memories with you I will never forget! You brought me so much laughter through the good times and bad, you have always lifted me up.  As I came from a difficult upbringing and didn’t have the knowledge nor support from anyone, you gave that to me and I can’t thank you enough. You always told me I could be somebody one day, you planted the seed for me to learn about a thing called an education, you never gave up on me. Believe it or not there are people out there that just does not know about education, only survival I know you know that because you defended them your whole 30 years, I was one of them.  Again, you planted my seed and my husband made it happen and of course me.  I left you a message, the last message I sent you, I am two classes before I earn my AA degree and also working on an AS degree in Information Technology and making straight A’s!!! Can you believe that!!! 
 you Loved the excitement of theme parks, just OMGoodness! How you love Orlando, you had it all planned and mapped out, so happy.  And your sports, drove me crazy, you had to know and watch all the games, Playing Santa Claus and me being your elf for all the children, it was so much fun going to the $ store and picking out children’s little gifts, you loved that so much, so much fun, you were so good at that! Your Irish brogue, also so perfect, you would think you were from Ireland, LMBO! Your knowledge of literature, I would love to hear you read a book, Your way of rescuing me in my deepest darkest days, which were a lot. Your love for going to the Irish Pubs. I will never forget you my Irish Lad, will meet again in our Heavens. "May the Road Rise Apon You". You will alway be my lucky Charm. Until we meet again and we will...

I've known Brian for literally as long as I can remember, and I still can't really imagine my life without him in it. I'll never forget the countless roller coaster rides, talks about Doctor Who, or that silly finger trick that fooled me way beyond the age it should have, and I'll also never forget all the kind things he did for me, or the joy he always seemed to have whenever I saw him. He was the best uncle a girl could ask for <3

Knew Brian along time but moving always separates those who you care about. He was a funny good hearted person.  Without a doubt he is surrounded by Angel's and flying high with God. Kelly M Gibson

Brian was a wonderful person  and a mentor to me as well.  As a young lawyer he took the time to show me the ropes and was always available to advise me, and teach me the tricks of the trade.  I was also fortunate to know him as a friend and attend numerous sporting events, football, soccer, baseball.  We even attended the opera together.  A kind soul and a good person. I will miss him. I will think of him often and fondly.

Brian was such a great guy, professionally and personally.  He had an infectious laugh that we all will miss.  I had the good fortune to work with Brian on some cases.  He truly cared about his clients and others.   It's with a heavy heart to say good-bye to Brian, but I know he's probably enjoying a pint somewhere in heaven.  My heart, prayers, and thoughts go out to Debbie, his family and friends.   

We are so saddened to hear about such a great loss. Brian was one of a kind.  His great spirit and sense of humor will be  profoundly missed by all.  He fought hard for his clients and was a well respected attorney. God has gained another angel.  Forever in our thoughts and prayers!  

Seeing you today was hard my friend. It brought a flood of tears to my heart you were in many ways my hero from childhood on up  to today they say hero's don't die they live on .You will live on in many people whose lives you changed the justice. And the compassion you gave everyone who  .you met love you and may you forever rest in peace my friend LoveElizabeth 

Brian will always be remembered for his twinkling eyes and his beautiful soul. He will be dearly missed. May He Rest In Peace.

I met Brian as a young attorney at the Broward County Public Defender's office. He was a great mentor to young attorneys. However, it was also clear that he was a good person at heart. Wherever he went, he always seemed to have a smile, and an infectious cheerful personality and positive attitude. 

May he rest in peace. My condolences to Debra and all of his loved ones. 

I knew Brian from my days in the Public Defender's Office. He was the role model for many of us. The was witty, smart and always willing to help. Over the 14 years I was there I was lucky to work with him. He was willing to help anyone. He never looked down on anyone. He was there to make us smarter and better lawyers for the poor. He was humble but not to be overlooked. Loved working with him. I know he is in Heaven watching out for us.

Dear Debbra,
Soooo sad Too young!  Brian was such a loveable guy. My heart goes out to you dear Debbie.  You didnt have enough time together. Dwell on the quality and not the volume. You both were such a darling and great couple. So glad Uncle  Hal got to attend your lovely wedding. That was his  last special event too.  
So glad I got to know and love Brian on our Disney celebration time. We all had such immediate and good vibrations, fun and laughs and a really favorite time together . 
Sometimes  life just isnt fair. He should have had a longer life. Please hang on to those good memories you shared. No one can ever stealy those special times you had together .

Brian was a true believer! He was a gifted attorney and a pleasure to be around. His smile was as robust as it was sincere. May he rest with God. My condolences to his family.

Brian yes were always the life of the party 

Brian and I go back 35 years to 1985 when he supervised me in my first jury trial as an intern with the PD's office.  He didn't change in all that time.  He was the consummate gentleman. He was one of the rare ones who never had a bad thing said about him by anyone.  Although he left us far too soon,  Brian still had the time to make the world a better place while he was with us. Brian will be missed by many, but the memories of him will somehow make his loss more bearable.  Be at peace, my brother. 

It began at a most magical wedding — to his beautiful wife – our cousin... Deb, and we remember ever-pleasant Brian — the parade of bagpipes, and the happy couple’s unforgettable first dance.  

We also remember last seeing Brian and Deb at our family gathering at Disney World, and it was no secret that Brian greatly enjoyed going to Disney with Deb – holding hands.  It is notable, and a unique quality in a person, that every time we’ve ever seen Brian, he’s always been present with a smile on his face.  Brian will always be remembered as a bright, happy,  kind, and intelligent — warm and loving person.  He will always be cherished in our hearts, and never be forgotten.  We both feel so very thankful — and grateful, for having known Brian.   We appreciate the kindness, warmth and love that always seemed to emanate from Brian — this was so clearly who he was — a part of his soul, this cheerfulness – part of who he was — his being – his essence.  Brian was proudly part of our family, and now there’s a piece missing - he will always be missed.  We will always love Brian, and cherish his memory — he was a beautiful soul.  

Debra i can only imaging what you are feeling right now. All of us who knew this wonderful man are going to miss him dearly. I am going  to especially miss my childhood friend. But rest assured that the good Lord has him safely home in his loving hands and that he is at eternal peace love you and prayers ajways .

Am so glad my path crossed with Brian’s when he fell in love with my beautiful flower girl at my wedding and cousin Debbie. I will treasure the time I had to get to know him. It was such a joy to have attended his and Debbie’s special wedding. His memory is etched in my heart.
