Fort Lauderdale, Florida - Passed away March 19, 2021 in Trust Bridge Hospice, Pompano Beach, FL.
Predeceased by his parents Gerard Schmale and Pietje Van den Brul; brother Willem.
Survived by his loving wife Gail (Thompson) Schmale of 59 years. Besides relatives and friends in USA, he had many relatives and friends in the Netherlands, Spain, France and Canada. Ed immigrated to the USA from Hilversum, Holland in 1959 and settled in Rochester, NY where his brother and other family members lived. During WW II and German occupation of the Netherlands, his father died. He was young enough to be outside his home without being taken away by the Germans. He worked on a farm and was able to supply his family with vegetables. He had many jobs after the war including restaurant cook, a cutter in a clothing factory and delivery driver. Thereafter, he spent about 10 years working on Norwegian freighters and tankers. He traveled all over the world and enjoyed being at sea for long periods of time. He decided to change his life and immigrated to America where his brother lived. He worked at Eastman Kodak for awhile, but was anxious to explore other opportunities. He was in charge of clubhouse maintenance at Oak Hill CC for several years which included the 1968 US Open. He then developed and managed several light industrial properties in Rochester. In the early 1970's he and Gail moved to the Florida Keys to manage a resort. In 1974, they moved to Fort Lauderdale and became real estate agents. After retirement, they enjoyed motor trips in Europe and USA and sailed on many cruises. Ed is sadly missed but never forgotten.
Interment: West Webster Cemetery, Webster, New York
