him. And those of us who did know him, affectionately called him
“Grandfather”. Denton was the youngest of seven children born
to Richard and Evelyn Harriott on May 9, 1932 in Newcastle, St.
Thomas, Jamaica. Sadly, he lost his parents during his youth and
being the youngest child he was raised primarily by his siblings.
As a young man Denton moved from Newcastle to Danver’s pen
and later to Kingston seeking good employment.
He was a true Jamaican man of his time. Meaning, he worked
very hard, he loved his family, he enjoyed his food and he loved
his buffet of women. During this period in his life he produced
two children, a son Michael Harriott and a daughter Hortense
Harriott. He fathered Hortense with Phyllis Brown. He was also a
step-father to Joyce, Gifford, Desmond and Fitzroy.
Denton was a very proud, strong, loving, and caring man.
He leaves behind daughter Hortense Powell, son Michael
Harriott, son-in-law Noel Powell, Granddaughter Kim Foster,
Great grandsons Oristan & Triston Foster, great granddaughter
Kristen Foster and many nieces and nephews.
While Denton’s passing leaves a heartache no one can heal, his
love leaves memories no one can steal.
