Derrick George Whyte was born on April 14, 1940, to the late Thomas and Lileath Whyte in Kingston, Jamaica. He departed this life peacefully in Pembroke Pines, Florida, at the age of 86, following complications related to dementia.
To speak of Derrick is to speak of a man whose life was rooted in love, faith, family, and generosity. He was kind and compassionate, loyal and honest, loving and forgiving—a man who had a remarkable ability to see the best in others and to make people feel that there was always something good worth holding on to.
Derrick carried with him the warmth of Jamaica and the richness of a life well lived. He had a deep love for music, and his cherished record collection reflected the joy that music brought to his life. You could often tell when a favorite song was playing—not by anything he said, but by the gentle tapping of his feet keeping time with the beat. He loved good food, beautiful cars, and the simple pleasures that made an ordinary day special. He was also a man who loved to work with his hands. This started at a young age when he attended trade school to become a mechanic at John Crook Ltd. His garden was a place of quiet pride and pleasure; there he tended to his ackee, mango, callaloo, and other treasures of the earth. There was something deeply fitting about Derrick nurturing the garden: he spent his life nurturing people, too.
Above all, Derrick was a family man. His greatest joy was his children and grandchildren, and his love for them was steady, deep, and unconditional. He was a devoted and faithful husband to his beloved wife, Maureen Whyte, with whom he shared a life built on love, commitment, and family.
Derrick's generosity was one of the qualities for which he will be remembered most. He gave freely, loved generously, and offered forgiveness readily. His charisma drew people to him, but it was his heart that made them stay. He worked hard throughout his life and took pride in providing for and caring for those he loved.
And then there was his faith.
Derrick carried his belief in God not merely as words, but as something woven into the way he lived and loved. His familiar blessing was often his parting gift to those around him: “May the Lord bless you and keep you...” Those words now feel like an echo of the life he gave us—a blessing that continues beyond his earthly presence.
Derrick leaves behind his devoted wife, Maureen Whyte; his children, Derrick Whyte (Marylyn), Dean James (Hilda), Elaini Arevalo (Philip), Jonathan Whyte (Keilany), Patrick Whyte, and Donovan Whyte; his beloved grandchildren, Joseph, Chereece, Cherelle, Troy, Naomi (Daniel), Dean II (Kaley), Jesse, Mia, Emma, Steven, Julianna, Nia, Isaiah, Darrian (Dedra), and Milani; and his great-grandchildren, Myhra, Mahli, Mindy, Etta Bea, Sullivan, Dean III, Elisha, Mae, Violet, Keziah, and Brooklyn; all of whom became part of the legacy of love he leaves behind.
He is remembered with love by his siblings, Joy Sudal, Lorna Small, and Kenneth White; countless nieces and nephews; extended family; and dear friends who cared for him. He was preceded in death by his brothers, Leroy White and Desmond White.
Derrick's life cannot be measured only in years. It is measured in the people he loved, the lives he touched, the meals he shared, the music he enjoyed, the gardens he tended, the laughter he brought, the forgiveness he offered, and the countless quiet acts of kindness that may never have been recorded but will never be forgotten.
Though dementia gradually changed aspects of the man his loved ones knew, it could never erase the imprint he had already made upon their hearts.
His hands may no longer tend the garden.
His feet may no longer tap to the music.
His voice may no longer offer the familiar blessing.
But his love remains—in his children, in his grandchildren, in his great-grandchildren, in the memories of those who knew him, and in every life made gentler because he was part of it.
Derrick lived a life of faithfulness, generosity, hard work, and love. And now, after his long journey, he rests in the peace he so faithfully believed in.
May the Lord bless you and keep you, Derrick.
May the Lord make His face shine upon you and give you peace.
You were deeply loved.
You will be profoundly missed.
And you will never be forgotten.
A Celebration of Life will be held at Forest Lawn Funeral Home, 2401 Davie Road, Davie, FL 33317, on August 29, 2026, from 10:30 am to 1:00 pm.
