It is with great sadness that we announce the death of Frances (DeRita) Adams. Fran died peacefully with her family in a hospice in North Carolina on Wednesday June 1st 2011. She had a variety of illnesses for a long time (including diabetes, heart disease & prior strokes) and it was her choice to enter a hospice near her son’s home (Rick).
Let it be a comfort to you that Fran spent her final five days in a festive setting (alert, happy and without pain), surrounded by friends and family, in a joyous ‘going away party’ atmosphere, with lots of visitors, while friends, family and admirers called in from around the country. Fran also got to enjoy chocolate, cheesecake and many of the rich foods she could not eat in her final years, which brought her much joy. You know how much she loved food and companionship!
Mom was an amazingly loving and generous woman who will be missed by many. A leader in her community for 50+ years, Fran Adams was PTA President, co-founder of Edgewood Community Association, active in local campaigns, a long-time state coordinator for TOPS Club, card club organizer, Purple Hat Club member, you name it. She was the ideal volunteer and leader -- always giving of her time and considerable talents to her community and wide circle of friends. Fran’s birthday and wedding cakes were legendary, as were her large spaghetti dinners and open door for people who needed a place to live while they restarted their lives. Her large dinner table was enjoyed by all.
She was preceded in death by her loving husband, Archie. She is survived in death by her eldest son, Rick, and his wife Carrie, and their daughters Meghan and Colleen, along with her youngest son, Greg and his wife Marie, and their children Tommy and Emily. She leaves many grieving cousins, nieces and nephews. Her devoted sister, Terry Scheinblum, was fortunately with Mom in her final days and will join the rest of Fran’s large family and set of friends for a celebration of Fran’s life on Tuesday June 7th at 7pm at Forest Lawn Funeral, Home South, in Davie (at the Pyramid). Viewing begins at 5pm. Memorial service at 7 on Tues the 7th.
Her funeral and entombment at Forest Lawn will follow on Wed June 8th at 11am.
Funny, generous, loving and devoted, “the Purple lady” will be missed by all. We welcome your participation and attendance, as we salute ‘a life well-lived’ on Tuesday at 7pm.
If you would like to speak or add comments on Tuesday, or post online photos of Fran, please do so.
Memorial contributions can be made in her honor to the ARC of Buncombe Co in Asheville P.O. Box 1365, Asheville, NC 28802 (828) 253-1255. ARC builds hope and provides services for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities, and both Meghan and Mom loved ARC.
Or if you choose, purple flowers would be a welcome tribute to Fran at her service.
