Hermione Jacqueline Jasmin Belhomme, age 99, was born on December 31, 1926, in Grand Riviere, Haiti to Marcelline and Racine Jasmin. She was the oldest of five children.
At an early age, she was married to Pierre Gabelus Belhomme and together they started a large family. After the birth of six children, her husband traveled to the United States and Hermione moved with her children to her parents’ house in Cap-Haitien, Haiti. In the early 1950s, she joined her husband in the United States, leaving her children in the care of their grandparents. Pierre and Hermione settled in Brooklyn, New York and she gave birth to three more children. When her mother became ill in the summer of 1962, she and her husband returned to Haiti. During that stay, they adopted a daughter, then, for the final time, gathered their ten children and reestablished their life in America. The young couple were pioneer members of the Hebron French Seventh-Day Adventist Church in Brooklyn, New York where she sang soprano in the church choir directed by her husband.
Hermione’s first job was in a chocolate factory, but later, she took a secretarial course and began working in the banking system. In the mid-seventies, health concerns prompted a move to the warmer climate of Miami, Florida. Well into her fifties, she pursued her lifelong dream of becoming a nurse when she completed an auxiliary nursing course and began working as a Certified Nursing Assistant until her retirement.
Hermione passed peacefully in her sleep on Friday, September 25, three months and six days shy of her 100th birthday. She lived a full life, by God’s grace. She is survived by her sister, ten children and their spouses, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren and a host of nephews, nieces, and cousins. Hermione Belhomme loved the Lord. She was a devoted wife to one husband, mother, a devout Seventh-Day Adventist Christian, and a mighty prayer warrior. As a member of Lauderhill Seventh-Day Adventist Church, Hermione became a cherished church mother to countless individuals of all ages, praying for pastors and her church family for decades. Her presence is already sorely missed but we look forward to meeting again “when the trumpet sounds.”
