Ilene was a force in everything she did—in her love, in her work, in her home, and in her community activism. She lived fully, loved deeply, and brought strength, humor, and determination to everyone and everything she touched.
She served on the Board of Directors of The Pride Center at Equality Park from 2007 to 2015, including three years as Board Chair. She worked tirelessly to raise funds for The Center and was part of the team that helped lead the way to the purchase of the Equality Park campus, creating a permanent home for generations to come. She was also a founding member of the GLBX, the Gay and Lesbian Business Exchange of the Greater Fort Lauderdale Chamber of Commerce.
Friendship was one of Ilene’s greatest gifts. When she loved you, she loved you for life. If she welcomed you into her circle, you were there to stay. Her lifelong friendships were a reflection of her fierce loyalty, her generosity, and the deep way she valued connection.
Ilene is survived by her loving wife, Maura Lane; her sister, Leslie Berliner of Huntington, New York; her niece, Nicole Valvano; her nephew, Michael Loupis; loving cousins Diane, Eddie, and Sheila; and a wide circle of extended family, dear friends, and chosen family whose lives she touched deeply.
She will be remembered for her generous spirit, her sharp wit, her fierce loyalty, and the way she made people feel seen, welcomed, and loved.
