James Phillip “Phil” Covell, age 71, of North Port, Florida, passed away peacefully on November 6, 2025. He was born on December 12, 1953, in Lockport, New York, to the late Donald and Wilma (Knudson) Covell.
He is survived by his loving wife of 45 years, Colleen Talty; his devoted children, Joseph Covell (Sharla Ricafort) and Lauren (Brian) Bahr; and his sister, Marsha (Sam) Baghdadi; and many loving nieces and nephews.
A graduate of the University at Buffalo, where he met the love of his life, Colleen, Phil built a long and meaningful career as a hospital administrator. He was admired by his colleagues for his compassion, integrity, and unwavering commitment to helping others.
Outside of his professional life, Phil was known for his warm and generous spirit. Family was at the center of everything he did. One of the things he enjoyed most was watching his children play sports as they grew up, always willing to travel far and wide to see their games. He was quick with a smile, a kind word, or a helping hand. His sense of humor, loyalty, and genuine kindness touched all who knew him. Phil had a remarkable gift for making people feel welcome and included. He believed everyone had something to contribute.
He loved spending time on the golf course with his friends in his weekly neighborhood leagues, always bringing laughter to every round. At home, he found joy in cooking for those he loved — his famous French toast and veal parmesan were family favorites that will always be remembered fondly. And he was often seen with a cold glass of milk in hand, a small trademark that will forever bring a smile to those who knew him best.
Phil’s legacy of love, laughter, and generosity will live on through his family and friends who were blessed to know him.
A celebration of his life will be held on November 20, 2025, at 10:00 AM at San Pedro Catholic Church in North Port, Florida. A brunch will follow.
