John was born on November 20, 1962, to John and Barbara Major in East Hartford, CT. John grew up in the family’s business, Hey Mr. Butcher! located in Broad Brook, CT. After graduating from East Windsor High School, he relocated to Fort Lauderdale and followed in his father’s footsteps to begin a long career in the meat industry servicing many restaurants and hotels in Florida. Being a jack of all trades, he switched his career later in life to test his skills at carpentry. He furnished numerous yachts and homes with his fine creations. He finished his career at Port Everglades as a carpenter before retiring in 2008. After retiring he became an avid reader enjoying sci fi and fantasy titles.
John’s true passion was fishing. He was a former member of the Broad Brook Angling Club in CT. He fished the Broad Brook stream behind his childhood home and took many trips to Misquamicut Beach, RI with his family…memories he always cherished. While in South Florida, he spent many days on the fishing piers and chartered many boats in Fort Lauderdale, the Florida Keys, Lake Okeechobee, and the US Virgin Islands. He loved the ocean and all the beauty it offered.
The family would like to thank the staff, nurses and doctors at the Cleveland Clinic of Weston for their unwavering love, care and support. Our family was constantly reminded of “what a nice guy and how kind he was” while being cared for over many years. We would also like to thank the nurses and dialysis technicians at Davita Weston for always supporting and caring for him each and every week.
A celebration of life will be on Friday, June 20, 2025 from 6:00 – 8:00 pm at Fred Hunter Funeral Home, 718 South Federal Highway, Fort Lauderdale, FL 33316.
