El Niño was an exemplary husband and father. Jose, although not the youngest was called "El Niño*, a name that stuck with him throughout his life. He was one of fourteen children. Born in San Juan Y Martinez, Cuba to humble beginnings and emigrating from Cuba in 1970 with his wife and two children, his life was not without struggle. Working in anything from farming, to construction, to masonry, and eventually retiring as a steel mill worker, he did everything to provide for his family, while trying to adapt to the challenges of life in a new country.
Even though he spoke very little English, it brought him great pride to become a citizen of the United States. El Niño never met a stranger than didn't become a friend. He was an avid guitarist, enjoyed Mariachi music and loved to play for the crowd. He recited poetry, especially of a political nature and regarding his native land, Cuba- which he held close to his heart always.
El Niño loved a great discussion on current events, locally and around the world and could easily school anyone on world politics- and he did! El Niño would cook and prepare anything from roast pork to crab-creole style- unmatched by chefs anywhere. He loved his guava and cheese pastries "pastelitos", not to be outmatched by his appetite for dark chocolate. Mostly, he was a kind, giving and loving person, especially toward children, doting on his granddaughter, Haley every step of the way.
He is survived by his wife Eloina, his children: Jesus, Maria Teresa, Cristina, and Susana his grandchildren including Haley and (others in Cuba) and great grandchild Kevin also in Cuba. His brothers and sisters: Juan (Ft. Lauderdale, FL), Pablo (Union City, NJ), Francisca Nory (Ft. Lauderdale, FL), and Consuelo (Havana, Cuba) and nieces and nephews in the States as well as in Cuba. Jose is predeceased by his siblings Segundo, Moises, Luis, Matilde, Paula, Nena, Gordiana, Carmen and Lucrecia. El Niño will be dearly missed by friends and family alike. We pray for his soul to rest in peace.
