Kenneth J. “Ken” Braid lived a life of extraordinary purpose, transforming success into service and personal loss into a legacy that changed the lives of thousands. A respected entrepreneur, mentor, philanthropist, and champion of young people, Ken passed away leaving behind a profound impact that will continue to be felt for generations.
Born in Champaign, Illinois, Ken developed the qualities that would define his life: determination, courage, integrity, and an unwavering belief in the potential of others. Ken attended Hinsdale Central High School, where he excelled both academically and athletically. A gifted athlete, he served as captain of both the football and basketball teams, earning the respect of teammates, coaches, and classmates. His leadership abilities were evident even then and would remain a hallmark of his character throughout his life. In recognition of his enduring contributions to athletics and philanthropy, he was later inducted into the Hinsdale Central Foundation Hall of Fame in 2005, honoring both his accomplishments on the field and his humanitarian impact off it.
As a student-athlete at the University of Illinois, he continued to build on this strong foundation, earning the respect of both teammates and coaches while serving as captain of the Fighting Illini football team. In 1973, he was honored with the Bruce Capel Award as the team’s most courageous player, a testament to his character and resilience. He was also recognized for his excellence in the classroom as a first-team Academic All–Big Ten selection and went on to graduate in 1974 with a degree in physical education. For Ken, leadership was never just a title, it was a lifelong responsibility. In recognition of his enduring commitment to leadership and service, and his dedication to improving the lives of others and advancing the welfare of humanity, he was honored with the University of Illinois Alumni Humanitarian Award in 2007.
Following college, Ken built Seabridge U.S.A. Inc., a successful international business career through vision, hard work, and entrepreneurial spirit. His ventures spanned the globe, with manufacturing operations and business interests in Malaysia, South Africa, Mexico, and beyond. Yet despite his professional accomplishments, those who knew him best understood that Ken measured success not by what he accumulated, but by what he contributed.
The defining chapter of Ken’s life emerged from unimaginable heartbreak. Following the loss of his beloved son, Kyle, Ken made a decision that reflected the very essence of his character: he would turn tragedy into hope. Determined that Kyle’s life would continue to inspire others, he devoted himself to creating opportunities for young people to discover their strengths, develop confidence, and become leaders.
From that vision, The J. Kyle Braid Leadership Foundation was born in 1994.
What began as a father’s tribute became a movement that transformed countless lives. Through leadership programs, mentorship experiences, and character-building initiatives, Ken, aka Mr B., empowered over three thousand young people to believe in themselves and to recognize their ability to make a difference in the world. He challenged students to lead with integrity, serve with compassion, and pursue lives of purpose. In recognition of this work, Ken was honored with the Brevard County, Florida Citizens of the Year Award for their dedication to helping young people develop leadership skills, character, and confidence. Many participants would later describe their experience through the foundation as life-changing, often crediting Ken’s guidance with shaping their futures.
To those who knew him, Ken possessed a rare gift: he saw potential where others saw uncertainty. He was the mentor who encouraged a young person to dream bigger, the friend who offered wisdom during difficult times, the leader who inspired confidence, and the businessman who never forgot the importance of character. He had an extraordinary ability to make people feel valued, capable, and worthy of success.
His legacy is not found solely in business achievements, awards, or accomplishments. It lives in the thousands of leaders, educators, parents, and students who carry forward the lessons he taught. It lives in acts of service, in lives redirected toward purpose, and in the enduring belief that one person can make a difference.
Above all, Ken’s greatest joy was found in his family. He is survived by his beloved wife, Sherry, whose unwavering love, partnership, and support were a constant source of strength throughout his life. They traveled the world with family and friends and made new friends along the way. Together, they built a life grounded in faith, resilience, generosity, and a shared commitment to helping others.
No chapter of Ken’s life was brighter than the one shared with Shadow, his beloved Goldendoodle. Living up to his name, Shadow was Ken’s constant, faithful shadow, anchoring Kens’ daily routines with a wagging tail and an intuitive presence that brought immense joy to each day.
He is also survived by his brother, Fred Braid, and his sisters, Bonnie Viorin, Carol Foster, Virginia Hanks, and Valerie Matulis. Ken held his family close throughout his life and deeply valued the lifelong bonds they shared. He was a steady source of encouragement, loyalty, and love to those closest to him, and his presence within the family will be profoundly missed.
He is further survived by his nieces, nephews ; all of whom were part of the broader circle of love and connection he cherished deeply.
Ken leaves behind far more than memories—he leaves behind a legacy of leadership, compassion, and hope. His life stands as a testament to the power of perseverance, the importance of giving back, and the enduring impact one person can have when they dedicate themselves to lifting others.
Though his passing leaves an immeasurable void, the values he championed and the lives he touched ensure that his spirit will continue to inspire for generations to come.
