A man of few words, but great integrity

On July 18, 1936, the late Arthur and Vester Carter welcomed their third child, Lenard George Washington Carter, into Thomas County, Georgia. Shortly thereafter, the family migrated to Miami, Florida. Lenard completed high school at Dorsey Senior High in Miami, Florida and he obtained his bachelor’s degree at Florida A & M University after which, he later further his education by obtaining his master’s degree.

Upon completion of his education, Lenard taught at various schools in Miami, Florida. Hence, Lenard’s reputation was a man of impeccable character, high moral standards, and honesty which gained him the respect of his employers and co-workers.

Lenard’s children often saw the scholar in their father. He was an excellent mathematician, poet, writer and music composer. He also enjoyed lively and provocative topics about religion, sports, politics and current events. His favorite scriptures were Psalm 23, Psalm 100 and Psalm 121, which brought him comfort and strength. Lenard’s favorite song was, “One Day at A Time Sweet Jesus.”

From previous unions, Lenard was blessed with five (5) children: Derrick, Dwayne and Dr. Ericka Carter-Rolle, Akeem and Keesha Carter.

While being employed as a Guidance Counselor at Comstock Elementary School, Lenard met Meral Gibson-Readon. Hence, this lead to a union being formed on October 7, 1997 and persisted for 22 years.

Erika, may the Lord give you the strength and peace you need during this time of deep sorrow. You honored your father and were by his side til the last minutes. My heart goes out to you and your entire family.

To be absent from the body is to be present with God. Your father has passed on to a better life in heaven my dear. He is no longer suffering or sick.

George is a first cousin who we grew up with in Liberty City. Ann and I visited from Goulds with Momma Johnnie Mae , Aunt Vester, Art, Betty and Evelyn-Tutti. Ann and I were Rose and George 's chaperones when he was dating her in Goulds. George was a great individual and writer who loved his children and family. Rest in peace.
