As we gather here today to honor Woody’s life and place him in his final resting place, it is with respect for a life well lived and enjoyed! We are here to say goodbye to you and lay you to rest with your life partner, “Tuck” Thomas Wesner Short who passed away on August 29, 1991. Your spirits have already joined. Today, your earthly remains will be interred together as your cycle of earthly life together has now come full round. Your beloved German Shepard, Gretchen will be interred alongside of you in your vault.
Woody was a true friend to all with a conscientious, caring, loving and irreplaceable support for those he loved. He was a proud grandson. He was a loyal and supportive son who was there when his father passed away on September 9, 1975 and did his part in seeing to his mother till her death 30 years later on the same month and day in 2005. Woody was a wonderful loving brother. No one could have had a better brother! He was a fun cousin! He loved his nephews and was proud of their academic success. He was glad for the opportunity to be a great uncle.
Woody succeeded past harsh adversities; never letting any negative or adverse situation stand in his way. He was a respected accountant and business man in his adopted State of Michigan. He was a Comptroller for a family owned and run aluminum fabricating company in Rochester Hills, Michigan for 25 years. For many years he drove the owner’s mother to and from Arizona each summer and then visited family, friends and theme parks out West. He “retired” from Auburn Metal Fab and moved to Saugatuck, Michigan and opened Tuck’s of Saugatuck, a Christmas shop in August 1987. Thereafter, he was asked to serve on the Saugatuck City Council as a Council Member; then as Mayor Pro Tem. He was on the Zoning Board of Appeals and the Kalamazoo Lake Sewer and Water Authority Board from 1987 - 1995. He was honored with a Plaque of Appreciation for his service to the City and residents and his lasting impression on the City. He retired in 2001, to live in Florida full time. He moved to South Florida in 2015.
Woody graduated from SPHS class of ’58, SPJC class of ’60 and attended FSU until 1961-62 where he participated in ROTC – U. S. Navy. He graduated with a BA in Accounting from Wayne State University in Michigan as well as obtaining a Master in Business. In his youth, Woody road the Florida East Coast Railways just for fun! He enjoyed the entire experience from the sound of the tracks, the wind in his face and seeing the development of the State. As an adult, he loved theme parks, zoos, and roller coasters! He especially loved Disney World and talked about wanting to be an official greeter! He was an avid puzzler.
Woody was a true patriot who loved his country and all the pomp and circumstance associated with the National Holidays. He was a Republican and respected President Ronald Reagan! He loved patriotic songs and listened to them on his travel across the U. S., and to and from Florida and Michigan.
Thank you for the contributions you have made and for the wonderful memories. It’s been a purposeful life; a legacy of thoughtfulness and caring for all. Your absence runs deep with admiration, love, and respect for all you did and stood for. Goodbye for now; until we meet again.
