On November 6, 1939, in the settlement of Mason Bay Acklins, a beautiful bouncing baby girl was born to Robert and Drucilla Gibson. They named her Miriam Meral Gibson. She was the ninth of fourteen children born to this union.
Meral, as she was affectionately called by everyone, received her early education at the All Age School in Snug Corner Acklins. Meral was a very brilliant, smart, and intelligent young lady who had great potential for her future career. Because of her academic leadership skills, at the age of 15 she was appointed as a Junior Teacher at the All Age School in Acklins, where she served successfully until she immigrated to the USA.
Meral accepted the Lord Jesus Christ at an early age and was very active in her local church, St. Matthew Baptized Church in Mason Bay Acklins, where she served as organist.
She loved music and was very good at the piano. When she was 18, her uncle, Reverend Edward Ferguson, needed a pianist for his church, The Beulah Missionary Baptist Church in Coconut Grove, Florida. He came to Acklins and took Meral with him to the United States for this purpose. She then became a member of his church. At the time of her passing, she was a faithful member of the First Baptist Church of Bunche Park in Miami, Florida.
During her service in the Beulah Missionary Baptist Church, she met and married Reverend Irvin H. Readon. To this union, they were blessed with three sons, Charles (“Chuck”), Phillip (“Phil”), and Eric. Later in life, Meral met and married Lenard Carter. They were together until he predeceased her.
Meral furthered her education at Miami Dade College and Nova Southeastern University, where she accomplished her master’s degree in education. She worked at Comstock Elementary School as an educator for 30 years until the time of her retirement.
