Michael D. “ Mike” Moore, age 73 of Fort Lauderdale, Florida, passed away on Friday, April 30, 2021 at Holy Cross Hospital. At the time of his passing he was in the hearts and minds of those he loved the most.
Born in Hammond, Indiana on October 13, 1947, Michael was the son of the late Charles and Lourain (Schweiger) Moore. Raised and educated in Hammond, Michael was a graduate of Hammond High School. Mike furthered his education attending Penn State where he received his BS Degree and Temple University where he received his Master’s Degree. Michael proudly served his country in the United States Navy as a Medic.
Mike began his career with the Public Health Management Corporation in Philadelphia in the mid 1980’s, initially directing programs serving homeless individuals and families. During that period, Mike developed and directed the ChildLink Program, that coordinated therapeutic services for infants and toddlers with developmental disabilities and delays. Mike then built on the success of that initiative by creating the PersonLink Program, which offered services and support to children and adults with behavioral and intellectual disabilities.
Mike also was a mentor to the staff working in these programs, enabling them to advance and grow both personally and professionally. Throughout his time at PHMC, Mike strived for excellence in everything that he did, leaving a legacy of success and achievement. Mike retired as Vice President of Individual and family support systems, after more than 25 years. Michael was also co-owner of the New Hope Cheese Shop with his partner John Richards.
The family stories of Mike “ and his animals” reflect on his life long commitment to any animal in his keeping. As an adult his passion more specifically was dogs, especially small ones. Michael was long known as the dog whisperer, and his reunion at the Rainbow Bridge will be one of his biggest accomplishments.
Mike was a voracious reader, an experimental cook, and enjoyed growing plants, orchids and caring for his many dogs and most recently enjoying “paint by numbers” while watching TV and he so enjoyed his times at the movies. He was compassionate, smart, creative, and non-judgemental of others lifestyles or opinions. Mike had a great sense of humor that will be missed by many.
Michael is survived by his sister, Teri Moore of Fort Lauderdale; a nephew, 2 nieces and their families and several cousins. Mike also leaves his devoted canine companion Ben. Michael was predeceased by his partner, John Richards, his brother, Patrick Moore and several aunts, uncles, cousins and numerous family pets.
