I knew Mohamed Ghuneim for many years, even before I met him. His unique voice and correspondent reports captured the mind and heart while I was overseas listening to the radio. Later, I was lucky enough to work under him while he was Chief of VOA Arabic Service and Supervisor of the then newly established Arabic TV. Our friendship was strong in those days, and only grew stronger after his retirement in the late 90s.
It isn’t every day you meet someone like him. His sincere smile never departed his face. He respected everybody, so he deserved the love and respect of all. He was always the first to call people on both happy and sad occasions. Mr. Ghuneim served as a role model for how to be an active and positive person. Beyond his professionalism, he was such a decent, humble human being. This is the kind of personality that will never be forgotten. He is already greatly missed. Rest in peace, Mr. Ghuneim. My sincere condolences to your dear family.

I have known Mohamed Ghuneim for 42 years since I joined the Voice of America in 1978. He has been the kindest human being for everyone around, extending help even without asking. As a newcomer with no credit history I could not secure a car loan. The minute he knew he co-signed for me without any hesitation. As a broadcaster he was a school by himself, God blessed him with a golden voice and unique presence in front of both microphones and cameras. As a chief of VOA Arabic he was so efficient and fair to everyone. After retiring he kept close ties with old friends and colleagues and led the efforts to convene a periodic reunion where he was so generous with food and fond memories. He would be greatly missed.
