Norma Nora Scott was born on March, 27, 1947 in Santa Cruz, St. Elizabeth, Jamaica to parents Imogene Bowes and Cyril Miller. Most of her adolescence was spent in Santa Cruz, where she lived with her loving Bowes/Miller family of 4 brothers and 6 sisters.
She attended school in St. Elizabeth and was raised by both her parents, as well as her stepmother, Atlis Miller up until the age of 17… when she decided to make the move from Santa Cruz to reside in the idyllic seaside town of Port Antonio, Portland, with her older sister Ruby Hayden.
Port Antonio became her adopted hometown and was where she met her first love, Desmond Scott. They later married and gave birth to their two beautiful daughters Theresa and Yvette. Desmond's family, the Scott family, would became her new extended family. She always referred to Desmond’s siblings as her siblings and did so up until the time of her passing.
In May of 1983, she migrated to United States permanently with her family. They forged a new life, filled with adventure and accomplishments while residing in the Bronx, New York. It was while living in the Bronx that she fell in love with and decided to pursue a career as a Registered Nurse. It was a career in which she took great pride and all who knew her was impressed with her persistent drive and faith to see this dream realized.
In 1998, she once again decided to forge a new path by moving from New York to her new home in Miramar, Florida. It was here in Miramar, Florida where she would build on lasting friendships, love, and family until her passing.
Norma had an immense love for sports. She gravitated to the games of basketball and soccer from a young age. Soccer was the sport that caught her eyes as a child by way of her brothers. Norma’s interest did not stop there. She also loved fashion and was coined a fashionista by her daughters. Norma was always dressed to impress which only enhanced her natural beauty. That same love of fashion was passed down to her two daughters.
To know Norma Nora Scott was indeed to love her. She was defined by three things. Faith, Family and Friendships.
She was devoted to her Baptist faith her entire life. She loved, praised, and worshipped God with steadfast faith and conviction. One of her favorite sayings was to simply say, "In the name of Jesus”… and it became her daily mantra.
In her two daughters, she saw the only treasures she needed here on earth. They were her entire world. She loved and protected her girls like a lioness with its cubs, right up to her final breath. In her, they found their rock, their protector, and their best friend.
Her many sisters, brothers, nieces, nephews, grand nieces, grand nephews and grandchildren, saw in her a family matriarch whom they loved and relied on consistently. “Norms”, “Sister Norma”, “Auntie Normie”, “Auntie Norma”…as she was affectionately known to them all…was simply their everything.
Norma Nora, treasured her friendships, kept confidences, and was always there in times of need. Her selflessness was one of her greatest attributes. Her sudden passing has truly left a hole in the hearts of all her friends who held her close, especially her fiancé Vincent Banton with whom she was about to forge a new life as she was planning to move back to live permanently in Port Antonio, Jamaica with him at the time of her passing.
Norma is survived by daughters Theresa White and Yvette Phillip and Son-In-Laws Maurice White and Raphael Phillip ; brothers - Clarence, Lacelle, Horace, and Fitzroy; sisters – Beverly, Barbara, Jennifer, and Marcia; many nieces and nephews; and a host of other relatives. She is predeceased by her beloved parents and sisters Ruby and Jacqueline.
They say only the good die young and yes...we now know this to be true, because at the tender age of 73 Norma Nora took her final breath on 8/19/2020. She will be sadly missed and forever in our hearts.
