Pilar Grimanesa Bonariva was born on July 31, 1942, in Pativilca, Peru, to Marcelino and Eloida Vega. From an early age, she possessed strength, resilience, and unwavering devotion to those she loved.
At just 21 years old, Pilar courageously emigrated to the United States, settling in Washington, D.C., in search of new opportunities and a brighter future. In 1965, she married the love of her life, Pedro Bonariva. Together they built a beautiful life raising their two daughters, Mercedes and Gina.
Through determination and hard work, she built a distinguished career at the Organization of American States, where she dedicated more than 25 years of service. After retiring, Pilar relocated to Miami, Florida, where she began to acquire real estate and even opened up her own shoe boutique.
Affectionately known as "Lela," she was the matriarch of her family and the person everyone turned to for love, wisdom and unwavering support.
Lela was blessed with four granddaughters—Katarina, Isabella, Sofia, and Cristina—and two cherished great-grandchildren, Luna and Adelino, each of whom brought immeasurable joy to her life. She treasured every family gathering, every celebration, and every opportunity to create lasting memories with those she loved most.
Pilar was known for her remarkable generosity, her warm and caring spirit, and her deep pride in her Peruvian heritage. She loved sharing stories of Peru, celebrating its culture and traditions, and never missed an opportunity to listen to her favorite singer, Marc Anthony. She also found great joy in traveling with family and friends – creating treasured memories that will live on for generations.
Everything Pilar did was rooted in love for her family. Through hard work, sacrifice, and perseverance, she paved the way for future generations, creating a legacy that will continue long after her passing. Her kindness, grace, and selflessness touched everyone fortunate enough to know her.
Pilar is survived by her daughters, Mercedes and Gina; her granddaughters, Katarina, Isabella, Sofia, and Cristina; her great-grandchildren, Luna and Adelino; and her sisters, Maria Elena, Zarela, and Iris.
