Uncle Ralph was an Iron Man. He had been through a lot and some of the stories were unbelievable, but I know they happened, and I was there for a couple of them. He always told me how Marlene was one in a million, and he could never find another woman as amazing as her. He was a great father and was always interested and involved in his children’s lives, coaching baseball, driving everybody everywhere, making sure we egged the house of the opposing team’s coaches if they cheated. Fairness was important to him. He had many sayings, but one that sticks out was this. He said, “Remember Chief, you live a short time, but you’re dead a long time.” I liked that he promoted living a full life, be happy, seize the day. I don’t think he realized he will live on forever in all of our memories, pictures, videos and stories. My dad passed away before my kids were born, but I’m glad they got to meet Uncle Ralph and were able to spend time with him, hear the stories, and see what a wonderful person he is. Ralph is always in our hearts. Love you Hauser, your nephew Jay.

A few years after my dad passed away, Uncle Ralph and Aunt Marlene came to Vegas to visit my mom. Ralph and I would go out sometimes to play craps at the casinos. On this one trip, Ralph said to me “Chief, I’m only bringing 2 Grand so I can’t blow too much on the first night”.  I decided to only bring 2 hundred dollar bills. First we went to the Flamingo, where he was considered a VIP and he could have gotten a room and stayed there for nothing, but he and Marlene would rather stay at my mom’s house. Anyway, we got croaked at the Flamingo, Ralph lost a grand and I probably lost half of what I brought. We decided to go across the street to Caesar’s, to win back our bread. Caesar’s is a much classier joint anyway, and we had good luck there before. After about an hour and a half, Ralph had lost the rest of his money and I was also down to almost nothing. Instead of following our plan and just calling it a night, we went to the bar to strategize how we could get our money back. Ralph says to me, “Chief, we need more ammunition”. He said, “we need to get some more ammunition without going back to the house”. I remembered I had a debit card and could pull $400 out of my account so we did, and went back to the craps pit. 30 minutes later, we were broke again. It was about 2am now, and so Ralph decided we could go back to my mom’s house and he could sneak in the guest room without waking up Aunt Marlene and get some more paper. I wasn’t sure it was going to work, but we went back to the house, he walked real slow and quiet down the hallway, and moments later came out with another grand. We were back in business! We decided to go back to Caesars because we weren’t going to let those bastards take our money. 3am we are back at the craps table (different one) in Caesars, and by 5am we had won back the original money, the ATM money, and we were both up another grand each. Mission accomplished and we drove home as the sun was rising and he told me stories about my dad.

Ralph was my cousin, but mostly he was my great friend. He was like a big brother to me. The thought that I am no longer going to be hearing, “C’mon Guido, let’s go for a ride” saddens me. Those rides could be to the racetrack, to the Italian specially store or bakery, to a baseball practice or game, to the beach, to the golf course, or to visit friends or family. It wasn’t only the destinations that I liked, but it was any time that I spent with him.  He had such great experiences in his life, and his impressive memory made him a true storyteller.  I often told him he should write a book, and you know what? If he had it would have been a non-fiction best-seller! I looked up to Ralph. He was a generous man who lived life fully and loved life fully,  He was a tough guy with a heart of gold.  After spending a few days with him, my wife would have to “de-Ralph” me which always made Ralph and Marlene laugh. I guess I enjoyed his company too much! I miss him immensely. 

He was blessed to have Marlene as his wife and loved her and his children so much.  I have terrific memories of visiting them in Brockton. That beautiful home that Marlene and he created. And the stories of their lives there...always so entertaining! So much Panico family history and so many memories that I hold so deeply in my heart came from Ralph. I am so thankful to him for that, and so grateful that he was in my life. I miss my cousin, my friend. 

To Marlene, you are his soulmate and you are in Diane’s  and my thoughts always. To Butch, Vincent, and Mark,  I know you will keep your Dad’s spirit alive by continuing to share the stories and memories you have grown up with. To all of Ralph’s grandchildren, know your Grandfather was a great man with a good heart and his generosity towards his family, friends, and people in need knew no bounds.  Continue  his legacy.

Ralph grew up in a rough area of Roxbury, MA, not afforded the luxuries of many of today's youth. But Ralph yearned for more, so with dedication, long hours and hard work he invested in a restaurant/ bar and ran it successfully for many years. This enabled him to provide a comfortable life for himself, his  devoted wife Marlene and his three great sons, Butch, Mark and Vince. He loved to shower his family with gifts, trips and events. But there were lean times too and during those humbling times, lessons of humility were learned. Never forgetting his roots he was frequently known to take the less fortunate under his wing, offering shelter, food and counsel.  It was a trait he instilled into his family as well.
Sports was Ralph's passion and as Coach Panico, he encouraged many young athletes to pursue their love of sports as well. All the while he instilled the value of good sportsmanship into them.
Retiring in Florida was a dream of Ralph's and he achieved that at an early age. Several decades were enjoyed in the lovely south Florida climate and he remained healthy as a horse until about age 79. Several health issues ensued and sapped him of his vitality. 
Ralph passed away surrounded by his family at home which was a great comfort to him. Everybody who loved and cared about him is left with a hole in them, which can be filled by remembering the good times and there were a lot of them.       

Oh Marlene, Butch, Mark and Vincent... I am so very sorry for your loss.  I have such wonderful memories of our days in Brockton together.   The best neighbors/friends we could have asked for.   I am very thankful to have those memories.   Please know you are all in my thoughts and prayers!    Your Dad took my brother under his wing  and we appreciated that so much!!    Love to you all!

Dear Marlene, Butch, Mark, Vince, and all your immediate and extended friends and family.  I am absolutely heart broken of the news of Ralph's passing. I have so many great memories of my "2nd dad".  I was so fortunate after losing my dad at age 10, to have an unbelievable man step up and fill a huge void in my childhood. A father figure. Thank you for coming to my Little League games, hitting my groundballs at Tukis, Parmenters, the endless Red Sox games, The Baseball Hall of Fame.  The restaurants Rocky's, The European. IHOP when you "needed a cheeseburger".  All the times I was welcomed in and slept over your house. Introducing me to Joe Rindon, "Bucky the singing bachelor", and watching so many great games on TV.  You were such a great Baseball coach to watch in person. Just a Great role model and unbelievably kind, strong ,respected man.  "Houser" House, "trickster", Tricks, their are no words to describe how thankful, I am to have had you in my life. It would be an injustice trying to elaborate. Rest in Peace Houser. Dear Marlene and family.  I will always remember our times that Ralph would come into the store once or twice a week and tell us stories or bring in one of his croanies. I also will never forget the tickets to the “86” World Series.  We always enjoyed going over to your house to spend time with the family, especially at Christmas to celebrate Ralph’s birthday as well.  You will be sadly missed and I will never forget you! Hello Dad, I miss you very much. When you called me in December to say you were going on hospice, I could not handle the thought of losing you. I then thought about where you would be going and that helped ease the pain a bit. I thought of Grandpa Phil. You got robbed of your dad at a young age (it has been close to 50 years since he passed away), and I pictured you going to see him. I then looked up and saw the rest of the family you would be hanging out with. Sitting in a circle I saw Uncle Tony, Uncle Eddie, Uncle Louie, your cousins Bobby and Harry, and your two best friends Joe Rindone and Donny Porter. 
     When we talked that day in December you said you had no regrets, that you lived a great life, and that is definitely the truth. You and Mom went first class to Italy and Hawaii, and all of us went down to Disney World, Cypress Gardens, and Sea World on our February school vacations. As well as all of the vacations we took, we also had a lot of fun at home. We looked forward to going to Ralph's Roadhouse every Sunday night for pizza. I got a kick out of all the nicknames you had for your customers. There was: Shortstop, Mad Dog, Dog Patch, Freddie the Freeloader, Excuse Me, Sir Walter Raleigh, and Arthur the T. V. Man (we kids actually called him Athuritis), just to name a few. 
     And then there were all of the sporting events we attended. Nobody went to more Red Sox games than we did. I was just 7 years old when we went into the Red Sox dressing room and Carl Yastremzski gave me his baseball bat, and I will never forget going to all four games of the '75 World Series.  I also have fond memories of heading into the European restaurant in the North End for pizza after every game.
     Speaking of Fenway Park, your wish will of course be granted. Drew, Troy, Danielle, Dianne and I will be taking you to Fenway,  your final resting place, this summer.  I love you and miss you Dad. You were the best father in the world!  Love, Butch

We are so sorry for your loss. We have such wonderful memories of Ralph. When we were all together we shared terrific stories of the past, delicious food prepared by Marlene, and of course drank the finest wine from the Panico Cellars. Ralph was larger than life and greatly loved. We will miss him, but are thankful to have called him cousin and friend. His love will be forever in our hearts. Love and prayers to you all....

Ralph Panico was my grandfather, and perhaps the most impactful person on my life. He was there day in and day out from my earliest memories to my latest ones. From the time he picked me up from school to the time I had to usher him about in a wheelchair, he was always there for me, and we were there for each other. 

His stories, his demeanor, and his adages taught me to be tough and independent, but his actions instilled kindness and compassion for family and the less fortunate. Whether it was people in the service industry that he treated with respect and tipped generously, or a close friend confined to an assisted living facility that he insisted on taking to lunch as often as he could, even as he himself became inundated with ailments, he was considerate to others. 

When I was young, he’d always say to me “When the going gets tough, the tough get going.” It took me a long time to understand what he meant by that, but I feel I’ve grown to come to more of an understanding as I’ve aged. He meant that when situations seem bad, one can’t just sit idly by; you need to take action, make your own way, and have self determination. This is something he exemplified like no other in his own life. He feared no man, or anything for that matter, but this didn’t make him raucous. He still calculated his actions as best he could to determine what was right before he got going. 

These are the values he instilled in me, and anyone else lucky enough to have learned from him. Be good and be kind, but be tough and take no s***. He’s the man, I respected more than any other, and I can only hope to live my life in a way that echoes his values and does justice to his memory. If I’m lucky enough to have children of my own some day, they’ll never hear the end of what a great man he was. He will truly be missed and remembered with the utmost fondness and love. Sometimes the going gets tough, but it’s time for the tough to get going. 

Ralph was a family man. All his  family and extended family were so special to him. When our children were young , our vacation was spending time in a cabin on a lake enjoying our time together.  Sports was also a big part of his life  He enjoyed coaching in the baseball leagues and having team members to our home after the game for Italian spaghetti. He will be missed but forever in my heart.  His wife, Marlene

My Dad was the most amazing man I ever knew. He was happily married for over 60 years!  He was a devoted, supportive father to his three sons and also the most attentive and generous grandfather I've ever seen. He was so generous with others also helping many troubled children and adults in need, providing support, money and even shelter.  This great leader head coached hundreds of children and adults in baseball for 16 years, teaching good sportsmanship and values while winning championships. He led by example displaying unequaled physical and mental toughness, living  86 years.  He was determined to remain at his beautiful ocean view home at the end of his life with his loving wife.  My Dad passed away peacefully with my Mom on one side and myself on the other five minutes after his favorite event ended, the Super Bowl. He truly was amazing and is now home with God.

Dear Marlene, Butch and family, Mark, Vincent and Marcus.  I am so sad Ralph has left us.  I love this picture of him.  It shows his happy and mischievous side.  He lived a great life.  He loved his boys and grandchildren. He had a wonderful, kind wife.  My brother and I had a lot of fun and laughs growing up.  It was just the two of us. In our later years we enjoyed reliving the fun memories we had.  He had a great sense of humor.  I will really miss him.   Love, Dorothy       

Dear Marlene and Boys,
     Ralph was such a big part of my life since I was a young girl, more like a brother than a brother -in-law. I will miss him too. My heart is broken for the loss of a husband and a father. He was the only person who still called me by my childhood name, Tina. Rest in peace.

We loved Ralph so much and will miss having him share in our lives as he always had. We have so many wonderful memories of all our happy times together and how much fun and laughs we shared.
Ralph was a lucky guy to have Marlene and the boys always by his side. He enjoyed life to the fullest and always went first class....good food, good wine and a beautiful loving wife and family. He was so blessed.
Ralph, We know that you are now resting peacefully  in the arms of God ...or maybe coaching a baseball team up there. We all love  you and we miss you.
