Ruby May Frith Comrie, May 1919 - February 2015, daughter of Arthur Uriah Albergo Frith, and Rachel Maud Catherine Church, was born and raised in Kingston, Jamaica. She was a very talented beautician.
Ruby was encouraged to emigrate to the U.S. to assist a friend she worked with in Kingston, who started a beauty salon in Hartford, Connecticut.
Ruby married Leroy George Comrie, Sr. and soon became the mother of two sons, Leroy, Jr, and Ronald Earl. The family settled in Jamaica, Queens in the early sixties.
They became dedicated members of St. Alban the Martyr Episcopal Church, where Ruby served dutifully. They consistently hosted meetings, events, and especially holiday dinners, where they invited family and friends. Ruby was an excellent cook and people consistently requested invites to experience her Jamaican delicacies. Mother Ruby also loved to dress up and dance at special events. Ruby had a sly wit, always getting people to laugh and enjoy whatever long meeting, or boring event they found themselves in. Ruby also honed her sewing skills, and developed outfits for herself and her boys until they quietly rebelled.
Wanting to spend more time caring for her children when they were young, Ruby moved her hairdressing business right into the basement of her home in Queens, and had dedicated clientèle who shared stories and life experiences with her sons. Their home became a way station to many people who came from Jamaica, housing them until they could get on their feet in their new country.
Following their retirement, Ruby and her husband moved to Pembroke Pines, Florida in the early 1980s, where they could enjoy the tropical weather so fondly recalled of their native Jamaica, while enjoying gardening in their golden years. Ruby a life-long seamstress, was still enjoying this pastime right up until the week before she was hospitalized.
She was a determined lady who learned to drive at the age of 75, and in widowhood spent 18 of the last 21 years as a hospice volunteer. She is survived by her beloved sons, Leroy and Ronald, daughter-in-law Marcia, and grandchildren Kayla, Kyle, Liana and Benjamin Comrie, nieces, nephews, cousins, godchildren and beloved friends. She will be interred in the family plot in Davie Florida. May she rest in peace.
Ruby May Comrie, 95 of Pembroke Pines, Florida entered into rest on Wednesday, February 18, 2015. A visitation was held on Sunday, February 22, 2015 from 12:30 to 2:00 pm with a funeral service that followed at 2:00 pm at Forest Lawn Funeral Home and Memorial Gardens South in Davie, Florida. Ruby May will truly be missed.
