Selvin George Lewis, Foodah, Teach, died on Thursday, July 23, 2020.
Selvin G. Lewis was born on September 13, 1948 to Ceslyn Murray and Ceryl Lewis in Townhead, a parish of Westmoreland, Jamaica. He’ll be sadly missed by his children, brothers, sisters and a host of family and friends.
Selvin Lewis was a teacher who left an indelible mark on the lives of all he mentored. He was the patriarch of the Lewis comedy in the family. One thing that everyone will remember, is his golden sense of humor, even his laugh. He knew how to be serious as well as how to tell a good joke, which trickled down to his sons and daughters.
Selvin was a ladies man, but most importantly a girl dad. The main women in his life were his sisters and his daughters. He was proud of them all. He respected smart women and they were indeed that. He excelled as an educator becoming a principal at a young age in Jamaica. He loved to see when young minds put their all into their books because he believed that education was a lasting creation that’s irreversible.
He took extreme pride in his family. Selvin Lewis is survived by his mother, Ceslyn Harvey, his two brothers, Kenneth Harvey Jr., Stanhope Harvey, two sisters, Hyacinth Elliott and Eurickah Coote and his six children; Zemroy Lewis, Dalton Lewis, Jacqueline Lewis-Stewart, Khedeyne Lewis, Shaunna Lewis and Shaunette Miller. His seven grandchildren; Tafari Ian Lewis, Jasiri Zemroy Lewis, Alexandria Lewis, Kiana Lewis, Mikayla Lewis, Soibhan Lewis and Kevin Lewis. A family of nieces and nephews; Tony Samuels, Grace Lewis, Neville James, Vaughn Elliott, Annashari Bassaragh, Raul Coote, Sheree Coote, Matthew Coote, Errol Brown, Clive Mullings and Michael Johnson.
He was a man of little words but with just one look, he said so much. His signature every day look was his polo-like shirt, brown or dark pants and his work boots. He taught and dressed like a general, that was the principal in him that was a fixed characterization or personality quirk. He owned it!
Finally, the family asks that in honor of Selvin that you enforce education to your peers and youths to build them up. Selvin truly believed that “education is the passport to the future, for tomorrow belongs to those who prepare for it today”.
RIP to SG, aka the original Foodah, a son, brother, father, educator, and believer.
