Thomas Kane, a gentle loving Husband, Father and Grandfather passed away at home in Fort Lauderdale, Florida on April 27, 2020 after much suffering from liver disease which he endured with strength, humility and humor.
Thomas was a first generation Irish American. Born on October 15th, 1953 to Elizabeth Hughes and James Kane in Manhattan, New York. He attended Saint Jude School in the Inwood neighborhood of Manhattan. At eighteen years old he joined his Father and Uncle Thomas Kane in the Operating Engineers Union as an Air Conditioning Technician working various assignments at Breyers Ice Cream, The New York Times and the Empire State Building. His parents and family instilled in him a strong work ethic. Later in Fort Lauderdale, he worked at Holy Cross Hospital in maintenance, John Knox Village and Palm Aire in security.
In December of 1973, he met the love of his life, Nelly Johanna, who is from Colombia, South America. He married Nelly 11 months later at Good Shepherd Catholic Church. He is survived by his beloved wife Nelly of 45 years and two children he adored Nelly Elizabeth Kane-Macias and James Thomas Kane (fiancé Allie Loomis). He is also survived by a son-in-law he cherished, Rick Macias and three grandchildren he loved dearly, Sofia, María and Lucas Macias.
Thomas loved his Catholic faith, his family and his Irish heritage. He had been a parishioner of San Isidro Catholic Church, Saint Coleman’s and most recently Blessed Sacrament. He loved his family including his sisters Colleen Conroy and Annie Garvey, his cousins, including John Kane, who was like a younger brother, and numerous nieces and nephews.
Some of his favorite things included the New York Yankees, Pomperdale Deli, watching cable news or handy-man shows, homing pigeons, New York pizza, Jack’s burgers, chocolate egg creams, pistachio ice cream, fixing the sprinklers, and a good steak with a baked potato. When he wasn’t working he was devoted to his family helping around the house, picking up the children or coaching little league. More recently he was thrilled watching his son coach basketball on TV or playing with his grandkids. Thomas, also known as Tom or Tommy, was kind and shy, but would offer wise words of encouragement in his New York accent to anyone he befriended.
Thomas Kane lived a full life! He knew, loved and served the Lord. God blessed him with a wife that was by his side for better, for worse, for richer, for poorer, in sickness and health.
The family will have a private visitation, Mass and burial. In lieu of flowers, please offer prayers/ a Mass for his soul and if able, donations to Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church (to the church or specifically the Food Drive for families in need) in Oakland Park, Florida in memory of Thomas Kane. The family would also like to extend a special thanks to Father Bob Tywoniak for his love and spiritual guidance during this difficult time.
Thank you for reaching out and for your thoughts and prayers during this time. In lieu of flowers we asked that donations be made to a cause that was very close to Tommy’s heart, the Saint Vincent Depaul food drive.
