Joseph Umberto Torchia, 87, a resident of Fort Lauderdale, Florida, passed away peacefully on August 23, 2015. He was predeceased by his son, Bruce and survived by his loving wife Linda Joyce, his daughters Ellyn Verser Scott; Tracey Arien Mathews and Heather Jae Skelton. He was grandfather to Erica; Morgan, Megan, Sidney and Blake. Former longtime resident of New York City, NY, ‘Bert’, retired from a very successful 25 year career as a portfolio photographer, always managing to capture the perfect commercial headshot. His photos often succeeded in bolstering the careers of previously unknown artists. He photographed more than 20,000 performers including major stars Chevy Chase, Richard Gere, Beatrice Straight, Jill Clayburgh, Hal Linden, Irene Cara, Christopher Lloyd, Christian Slater, Jan McArt, Forest Tucker, and Scott Baio, to name a few. As much as Bert enjoyed photography, music was his first love. After attending Juilliard School of Music back in the 50’s, Bert celebrated a 14 year career as a composer, vocal coach, and arranger. He teamed up with various lyricists including Marty Charnin of “Annie” fame. In 2008 he produced a CD, “The Insightful Linda Torchia”, featuring his songs. In lieu of services the family has designed a private novelty memorial for loved ones and friends.
