Grandpa would sit with me for hours while he taught me checkers until I won every time. Then he taught me Giveaway, which is like checkers except now you have to lose your pieces first to win. He was always doing that; teaching me one thing after another. He would tell me about himself, focusing on events that he learned things the hard way. The story that comes to mind first is how he worked to save up his first new car, only to sell it to the dealership next door when he learned all cars are used cars. 

Forever grateful.

Condolences to those who knew him later in life. I found this obituary when wishing to write him a thank you letter while pondering all he had taught me. I'll leave it here instead.
