Aida Luz Martin

September 18, 1943 – February 25, 2026

Some lives are remembered in photographs. Others are remembered in song.

Aida Luz Martin was born on September 18, 1943, in Santurce, Puerto Rico. From the very beginning, music was woven into her spirit. As a young girl, she moved to Manhattan, New York, where the rhythm of the city became the backdrop to her extraordinary gift. In her early years, she became a beloved presence in the New York lounge scene, known affectionately as La Muñequita que canta — the little doll who sings. Her voice was not simply beautiful, it was captivating. It carried warmth, emotion, and a confidence beyond her years.

Music flowed through her lineage. Born Aida Luz Avilés, she came from a family rich with accomplished musicians, recording artists, trios, and quartets whose influence stretched across generations. She honored that heritage and carried it forward, eventually passing it along to her own children and grandchildren. The love of melody, harmony, and performance did not stop with her, it multiplied.

In a twist of providence that felt like destiny, she reunited in New York with Rafael Martin, whom she had known years earlier in Puerto Rico. What seemed like chance was perhaps divine design. They married and built a life rooted in devotion. Seeking a quieter place to raise their children, they moved to Massachusetts, where they finished raising four children who became her greatest pride and accomplishment.

Above all else, Aida was a devoted wife and mother. She poured her strength into her home. She believed deeply that her children would go further than she ever had. In her own way, she often expressed the hope that what had been her ceiling would become their floor and that they would stand taller, reach higher, and remain united. Her greatest wish was simple: that her family would love one another, stay close, and live happy, meaningful lives.

She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Rafael Martin.

She leaves behind her children: Wanda Freytes-Gavin and her husband Joe; Abigail Martin; Manny Martin and his wife Sara; and Arolinda Mateo and her husband Hector. She is also survived by her cherished grandchildren, Khristine, Jessica, Shadira, Alexis, Arlene, Alyssa, Cristian, Daniel, Adam, and Yasmin. Each of them carries a part of her voice, her resilience, and her heart.

A woman of steadfast faith, Aida’s trust in God anchored her throughout every season of life. Prayer was not an occasional act but a daily rhythm. She prayed for her children, for their protection, for their success, and for their unity.

One of the phrases she often shared was, “Dime con quién andas, y te diré quién eres” — tell me who you spend time with, and I will tell you who you are. To her, character was shaped by company, values were strengthened by community, and family was the truest reflection of the heart.

Later in life, after the passing of her husband, she made her home in Florida, where she continued to celebrate the successes of her children and delight in her growing family. Though the stages grew quieter and the spotlight dimmed, the music never left her. It lives on in the voices of her children and grandchildren, in the courage she instilled, and in the unity she prayed for.

A private family moment will be held in her honor.

Her song may have ended on this earth, but its echo remains in memory, in legacy, and in the harmony of the family she loved beyond measure.

“I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.”

— 2 Timothy 4:7
